Challenge: [090] Under Lock and Key
Title: Twilight Key

It is in those twilight hours at the end of that day that the line that divides them begins to blur. Sora can feel him; buried just below his subconscious. Another person. Another him. Kairi could feel it too. She would sit with Sora on the beach at this time, his hand clutched tightly in her own. So close, it felt. Perhaps just a little more this time, and she could . . . . The sun sank below the ocean’s edge. Sora wiped a tear from Kairi’s cheek and helped her to her feet.

“It’s okay, Kairi. Maybe next time.”

Ever since he had returned to the islands, Riku had felt strange. It wasn’t all the time. In fact, when he stopped to think about it, it only ever happened toward the end of the day when the sun was setting. It wasn’t anything life threatening; it was just a sort of tickle in the back of his mind. It was particularly poignant today, and Riku decided to clear his head with the aid of the small pool that formed at the base of the waterfall. The cold clear water was dyed a deep red by the setting sun as Riku splashed it against his face. As drop after drop fell from his hair, he looked down at the reflective surface and gasped. That couldn’t have been his face, distorted as it was by the ripples spreading across the surface. Stumbling backwards away from the water, he spun around when he heard approaching footsteps. Sora stopped, silhouetted against the final rays of the sun. Or was it Sora?

“Axel?” asked a familiar voice. “Is that you?”

“Roxas.”

The sun sank below the edge of the ocean.
