Challenge: [91.] Invincible
Word Count: 421
Title: The Principle That Matters
Notes: Disciplinary Committee love, rar.
“Ya know Seifer, one day you won’t be so lucky. There’s going to be somebody who’s not gonna let you get up.” Rai couldn’t cover the worry in his voice. Or look Seifer in his blackened eye. The last fight Seifer had involved himself in he had barely been able to walk from. Rai was proud that he could call Seifer his friend, someone who backed up his claims, but his pride was going to be his downfall.
“Like you think I care what you say,” Seifer’s tone was too forceful, echoing down the back alley where the trio hid. “The kid needed-- Damnit Fuu!”
Indifferent to Seifer’s outburst, Fuu waited for him to stop moving before applying more of the antiseptic. She cleaned his wounds not because she was his friend, but that Seifer would forget to and allow them to scar over. “Hold still,” was the only warning given before swabbing the deep cut between Seifer’s eyes.
He picked up where he left off, trying to ignore the stinging pain. “The kid needed our help. I’m not going to allow just anyone to do what they want around town--“
Rai cut in. “This is what ya get for playing the hero. You always told us to never get involved in other peoples’ business if it didn’t concern us! Not that,” he quickly added as Seifer’s angrily regarded him, “it’s a bad thing, but you could’ve been hurt.”
The last thing I wanna do is drag you away from a fight you can’t walk from, the unspoken thought hung in the air. The tall boy wished he had the nerves to voice the thought.
Waiting until Fuu had wiped the dried blood from his lip, Seifer snapped “That guy’s business concenrned us, beating up on a kid that trips when he walks and can’t find his way out from under his own hat. We’re the Disciplinary Committee, and nobody goes around town doing that to anyone.” Rai’s point was good, but his was better.
“Yeah Seifer, but--“
“We had to show him who was boss.”
“Defeated. Your point made?” Fuu’s only contribution in the argument, the issue Rai was trying to get across was neatly summarized by her. Seifer resisted balling his hands into fists and punching the wall.
“It’s the principle that matters,” he muttered in defence.
“With the way ya act, it’s like you think you’re invincible.”
Seifer laughed, hardly caring if the movement split open his lip again. “Maybe one day I will be, Rai.”
