Title: Beyond Infinity (Part 1 of 7)

"You're my favorite deputy"

An infant's giggle and a drool covered nose was the answer to Woody's words.

He could no longer remember how many years he had spent trapped inside that crystal display in the antiquities shop, collecting dust and cobwebs. Since the moment he had been created, his existence had been marked by the many children who once upon a time considered him their best friend. Several children who had grown up and left him behind, donated him to charity, gifted him to their own children or even sold him to toy collectors and antiquities shops.

Each of these children represented a story marked deep inside Woody's soul.

But the most unique of these stories started one rainy April morning, when a wandering sailor bought him as a present for his newborn son.

A few hours later, while he watched the baby's bright blue eyes slowly close as he fell asleep, Woody decided that they wouldn't be just playmates.

They'd become the best of friends.

And that's how their story began.

"There's a snake in my boots!"

- "No, silly! It's sand!"- The child said as he emptied one of Woody's tiny plastic boots. He had just turned three a couple days before and therefore was finally allowed to play in the beach, on the condition that he wouldn't get close to the seashore until he learned to swim. Both had spent the whole morning building a fort and the child was now covered from his spiky brown hair to his toes with wet sand. He gulped as he imagined how mad his mommy would become when they finally went home... and the long bath that would follow suit.

But that thought was suddenly forgotten as he noticed that someone was watching them from behind a palm tree- "What's that?"- He whispered as he took Woody and pressed him hard against his chest. The silent company of his cowboy doll gave him the reassurance he needed as he moved closer to the tree. - "Hello?"

Two serene aquamarine eyes peeked at him from behind the trunk. - "Hello."- The newcomer replied as he stepped out from his hiding spot. He was also a child, a bit older than Woody's best friend.

- "Your hair is funny."- The brunet said, pointing at the locks of silver hair that framed the stranger's face, who blushed slightly.

- "So is yours!"- He replied with a small smile, making the younger boy grin widely.

- "Wanna play? Me and Woody are making a fort! The biggest, bestest one in the whole Wild West!"

The other boy nodded.

- "Great! I'm Sora!"

- "Riku."- The older boy grinned as he started running towards Sora's bucket and shovel- "Race you!"

- "Wait!"- Sora laughed as he ran after Riku- "No fair!"

Feeling the wind against his plastic face as his best friend ran, Woody realized that he wouldn't mind sharing him with another child.

"This town ain't big enough for the two of us!"

- "Wow, Riku! Your Buzz is so cool!"

All right. So he had said he wouldn't mind sharing his best friend with another child. But that didn't mean he would share him with that dumb space guardian, Buzz Light-what's-his-name.

For the first time in his existence, Woody felt truly jealous as he watched his four-year-old friend play with Riku's birthday present. What was so special about him, anyway? He wasn't even aware that he was in reality a toy!

Oh! How he wished the sea would drag that obnoxious action figure away!

Woody never imagined that a similar fate would happen not only to Buzz, but himself too. One day, the children were so distracted playing tag that they didn't notice the huge wave that fell over Sora's red bucket, dragging it away with both Woody and Buzz inside it.

For days and days they floated among the blue waters, arguing to no end. Once Buzz realized that he wasn't in reality a space ranger and therefore wasn't able to fly away from their aquatic prison, they finally got along.

- "I guess this is my fault."- Admitted Woody grabbing nervously his hat- "I wished you'd be dragged away by the sea. I was afraid I'd lose Sora to you. I'm sorry."

Buzz nodded- "It's OK. I was arrogant and obnoxious back then. What I don't get is why you'd think that you'd lose him to me, Woody. Sora's your best friend, isn't he?"

- "Yeah."- Woody smiled as the memories flooded his mind- "He is. Too bad I'm never gonna see him again..."

- "Why not?"

- "Because we are trapped in the middle of the sea!"

- "Not for long!"- exclaimed Buzz as he pointed at an island that was just a few meters away from them.

And just as it had dragged them away a couple weeks before, the sea decided to return them to the loving arms of their children, who couldn't believe their luck when they found them in the shore of the small island they had "discovered" during the search of their lost toys.

As the children watched the sunset on top of the weird shaped paopu tree that they'd visit frequently the following years, Buzz glanced at Woody and said- "You think the sea wanted to teach us a lesson?"

- "Yeah"- replied Woody, thinking that Sora wouldn't mind sharing him with another toy- "It did."
