Challenge: [094] Conspiracy
Title: The Ecstasy of Betrayal
Word Count: 260
Spoilers: All of CoM.
"Anyone who hasn’t experienced the ecstasy of betrayal knows nothing about ecstasy at all."
- Jean Genet
He selects a book at random from the shelf and flips through the pages idly, his gaze focused somewhere beyond them. "Lexaeus is disposable," Marluxia comments, as offhandedly as if he were remarking upon the weather.
With a swift snap of her wrist, Larxene spins a dagger across the room and it impales itself, quivering, in the wood not half an inch from Marluxia's perfect nose. She smirks viciously. "Aren’t we all?"
-
"Nice work, Axel. Good riddance to that blabbermouth." Larxene speaks of Vexen's death casually but her eyes are sharp, watching Axel tersely as he twirls his chakram. She’s not a fool; she sees the way he and Naminé are careful not to look into each other’s eyes, and how measured their expressions are. A pity their childish plans will come to nothing.
-
His chakrams dirty but his conscience shamelessly clean, Axel surveys the empty blank corridors without a trace of regret. Vexen — Lexaeus — Zexion — Larxene — Marluxia. Five names, five epitaphs, five Nobodies who never were and never will be again. Xemnas will be pleased that the traitors have been eliminated.
Of course Axel's a traitor too — but who cares? Those whom he betrayed are dead, and the ones he'll betray soon will never guess. These halls were filled with conspiracies, overlapping and isolated, and how is Axel to blame if he just played the game better than the rest?
Spinning his chakrams into a blur of red and white and silver, Axel steps through the portal into the darkness, and leaves Castle Oblivion behind him for the last time.

(Honestly, he said several times that what he does is for his own entertainment.) I mean, the squishy friendship stuff is such a stretch for me. (I know it's canon, but it's just weird-feeling. Kind of like all the gooey romance in the sixth Harry Potter book. It's like, "no wai, rly? D:")
