Title: Cursum Perficio
Word Count: 418
Notes: Spoilers for KH2...Also, I've written a whole mass of drabbles for this prompt, but this one (written about ten minutes ago) is the one that I actually like. And cookies if you can tell what the title means.
It didn't matter that he was dreaming. What mattered--what truly mattered, because the mound of books and papers lying on his desk honestly didn't--was that he had a job to do. He rose and walked from his room, feeling the walls dissolve around him as he passed into an open meadow. He didn't question it, nor did he ask how the other figure had faded into existence beside him, the long shafts of his equipment slung over one shoulder. They didn't look at each other--not until they reached The Spot--and even then, it was only when Roxas took the second shovel from the crook of his arm and tossed it to Sora.
And then they started digging.
The earth was hard and heavy and clung together with the husks of a thousand crumpled Heartless, but the young men quickly fell into the rhythm--it wasn't all that different from fighting, really-- and the defeated soil yielded at last.
"What do you two think you're doing?" the voice chuckled from behind them.
"What needs to be done," was Roxas' simple reply, and he wiped the sweat from his eyes and kept digging. The hole was widened, deepened, shaped as roughly as a child's drawing.
"Silly," the voice noted, almost as an afterthought. "Do you really think it'll make any difference?"
"Sure it will," Sora said, even though he wasn't sure.
"I already told you," he said, "Just because you have a next life doesn't mean that I do--"
"And that's exactly why we're giving you one."
Axel didn't have much to say about that. He whisked to the hole's edge, gazing almost reverently into the pit.
"And if it doesn't work?" he asked at last.
"Then the least we owe you is a decent burial," Roxas said quietly.
"Good enough for me," Axel said with a smile, and he climbed into the depths of his grave. He turned and glanced at both, touching his temple in what might have been a salute. "In the next life, then," he said.
"We'll be waiting." And Sora and Roxas gathered a handful of earth--long since made pure by sweat and toil--and as one sprinkled it over his body.
Back in his room once more, Sora opened his eyes, alone except for the whisper of Roxas at the edge of his mind.
And far away, but closer than either would have guessed, in a world too close to be forgotten, a pair of emerald eyes opened to see the moonlight once more.
