Challenge: [100] One-Hundred
Title: ...And Still One Short
Wordcount: 365
Notes: Takes place during KHI. One-Hundred is still not enough.
"Are you sure we counted right?" Sora's face was grim.
Donald squawked, "Sure I'm sure!"
"Maybe we should try again," Goofy suggested.
"One, two…" the boy started.
Then it was, "Twenty-eight, twenty-nine…"
"Seventy-six…"
Until, "Ninety-eight…!"
"And Pongo and Perdita make ninety-nine and one-hundred."
Sora (who had been hopeful that the last tally would be different than the previous three) slumped in disappointment and sat on a footstool.
"We're still missing one?! But I looked everywhere!" The puppies overran the room like a field of black spots on white. He buried his hands into his chaotic mess of hair, cringing as the two grown Dalmatians looked at him with all the worry parents could muster.
---
Despite his name Lucky was not very lucky and very unfortunately lost. He paced the corridors of the castle he was in, each step hesitant. Dark shapes were everywhere – looming and coming closer. He whined as yellow eyes suddenly bubbled from the stone floor, stalking the puppy like whispy cats.
"Who's there?" a voice called out. Lucky's black ears perked and he stumbled towards the sound – the voice was warm, real, and human.
Riku froze as the bundle of fur scrambled to his feet, pawing at his leg and giving little terrified barks to be picked up. Glancing back at the corridor, small armies of shadows lurked hungrily.
Carefully, he picked up the puppy.
"You're really lost, aren't you?" he asked. Lucky replied by hiding his fuzzy head into Riku's armpit.
Together, they left.
---
"Traverse Town, huh?" he said sulkily while standing in front of the house door. That's what the address on the red collar said - it sounded like a kennel full of dogs right inside.
Lucky tried to cheer him up by licking his face. And Riku, who was a boy after all, smiled. He petted the pup one last time before setting him down on the welcome mat.
"Go home," Riku ordered. "At least one of us can."
Like a game of ding-dong-ditch with a twist, he pressed the door buzzer several rapid times before making a getaway. He would not stay to see the happy reunion, nor wanted to see Sora step out into the street, eyes searching - so he ran.
