The replica padded cautiously around the corner, into a blindingly white room, just to see Marluxia walk out.
"You have your assignment," he said briskly over his shoulder. "Don't fail me."
"Right," the prisoner-puppet said, her voice tiny and sad.
The Nobody walked past the replica as though he wasn't there. For a long time after that, Namine stared into the polished marble, looking for something she couldn't find. The replica crept up silently behind her, peering into the slab of stone. Still unsatisfied, she shook her head.
"Riku," she asked meekly, glancing up for just a second before she dropped her eyes to the floor. "Um..."
"Yes?" he asked, surprised to be addressed by the mousy little girl.
"There... aren't any mirrors in the castle, are there?"
"I... don't think so..." he said slowly, instantly regretting those words as he watched her face fall. "But I could ask Vexen to make one--"
"Oh! Don't do that!" she squeaked. Her pale cheeks flushed; she seemed to become even smaller, if that was possible, withdrawing into her chair.
"Why do you need one?" he asked, kneeling beside her, trying to force his artificial voice to sound gentle and sincere. And he was sincere--as much as he could be, anyway--and he really did want to help her, and maybe that's why she looked a little less distressed when she glanced up. Still blushing furiously, though.
"I..." she swallowed. "I need to know what I look like. I don't know."
"Oh." She'd been searching the polished stone for a reflection. That explained it."Well... maybe I can help." And he reached over, pulling a few boxes of crayons and colored pencils from her table. After a few moments of careful searching, he pulled a saphire blue crayon away from the others. "Your eyes are this color... but they get lighter and darker in places, like the spirals in the marble...your hair is this yellow color... but it gets a little bit darker, like this color, in a few streaks up in your scalp...and your face is round... and comes to a point at your chin." He leaned closer to her, studying her features intently. "You've got thin eyebrows... and a small, pointed nose... and your hair falls like this over your ears..." he mimed it on his own face, and the corners of her mouth crept up tenderly. He grinned in reply. "And you've got a beautiful smile." The blush deepened, and she stammered an incoherent 'thank you,' but he wasn't finished just yet.
"Yep," he said, leaning back a little. "You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen."

Date: 2007-06-10 01:42 am (UTC)One part of that is just the fact that she is surrounded by a bunch of very powerful, very dangerous, very volatile people, and she's not exactly in a position to get them angry and live. The other part is that she is, in fact, a girl, and therefore pretty self-concious of her appearance especially. Admitting that to her friend is hard enough, but letting Vexen and the other Nobodies know would cause major problems for her (especially from Larxene).
That was my rather longwinded logic.
And thank you for taking the time to review. <3
