Challenge: [120] Teenage Rebellion
Title: Ah, but Boy You're Only a Child
Word Count: 464
Spoilers: Eh. For KH2 I guess
Rating/Warnings: PG, lots of embarrassment.
Notes: Post KH2: Sora and Riku visit the Radiant Garden Restoration Committee. Riku temporarily forgets his table manners. (Aerith/Riku)
----
Shortly after Sora had introduced him to the Restoration Committee, Riku couldn’t help but notice that the older woman was staring at him.
“This is Aerith”, Sora had said a few minutes earlier, playfully shoving Riku forward so he could shake Aerith’s hand. He had been standing awkwardly in an attempt to appear more relaxed than he felt, and the shove had sent him stumbling, nearly falling face-first on Aerith’s boots.
Now, with the embarrassment fading and the atmosphere in the room relaxing, Riku had time to register his surroundings, to notice that Aerith’s eyes were still focused on him. Riku shifted uncomfortably, his gaze fixed on his hands. He tried to occupy himself with his dinner, or maybe think about Kairi back home once he realized he had lost his appetite. It was clear to him that he wanted to think about anything but Aerith staring at him.
He glanced to his right at Sora, who was debating- well, arguing- with Leon over fighting techniques or something; Riku couldn’t really bring himself to listen attentively to their conversation. To Riku’s left, Yuffie was watching Cid and Merlin with great amusement, as they were engaged in a verbal confrontation of their own. But Aerith was sitting directly across from Riku in silence, oblivious to the noise and movement around her, still staring at him.
Aerith was quickly becoming the center of Riku’s focus, and he hated it. His face grew hot, his hands shook slightly, and an odd, unfamiliar lump in his chest was making its way up his throat. He swallowed, tension turning into frustration as he sat up straight and slammed his hand on the table, sending a stray fork flying-
“Why are you staring at me?!”
Sora and Leon turned to Riku, mouths agape. Yuffie silently slid out of her seat to fetch the lost fork. Cid didn’t even notice the tip of the straw hanging in his mouth was on fire. Aerith’s eyes were wide, looking hurt and embarrassed. Riku immediately regretted his outburst.
Aerith addressed Riku later, as he was getting ready to leave. “I’m sorry about earlier”, she said. “You just…” She sighed slightly, smiling a little. “You just remind me of someone. He’s… still out there somewhere, fighting his own darkness.” Aerith took a step towards Riku, leaning forward a little until their eyes met. “I hope that one day, he’ll be as strong as you, and find his light so he can come home.”
Riku fumbled with his hands awkwardly for a minute before settling on jamming them in his pockets. “Oh… I-It’s okay,” he stammered, staring at his feet and refusing to look up at her.
Only Aerith noticed the bright red tinge in Riku’s ears as he walked off towards the marketplace with Sora.
