Title: Fairytale Roles

Notes: Kids at the beach contemplate how to choose who plays the fairytale parts…
The sun beat down on all of them and Kairi sighed at the two boys arguing next to her. “C’mon, why can’t both of you be the hero?” she asked. “It’s silly to fight…”
Riku sighed and shook his head, swinging the wooden sword idly. “It doesn’t work that way,” he said loftily. A whole year older than Sora and Kairi, Riku knew more (or at least he thought he did) than the two of them. “There is always a bad guy, always a hero and then a princess. The bad guy hurts the princess and the hero saves her.” He paused. “And defeats the bad guy, cause…he’s bad.”
Kairi toed the sand with the new beach shoes that the mayor’s wife bought her, face set in a frown. “What if the bad guy is just…mis…mis…?” she tried again. “What if he’s not really bad?”
“He’s bad, Kairi, he can’t be good at the same time.” His voice was decisive. “Now…who do you want to be the prince?”
Sora wasn’t looking at her as he dragged his sword through the sand, he didn’t say he’d rather there wasn’t a bad guy, but to have two good guys, cause he was sure that neither of them could be a bad guy with Kairi involved.
“Let’s have an imaginary bad guy,” she suggested instead, one hand on each of her boy’s arms. “Cause I want both of you to rescue me.”
Sora was enthusiastic about it, grabbing Riku’s hand. “C’mon—yeah—we’ll be the best team there ever was!” He swung his sword with more energy than before.
Riku couldn’t help the smile and he slowly agreed. “Yeah—both of us will rescue Kairi.”
