Title: The Reserves
Word Count: 538
Spoilers: None
Rating/Warnings: G, none
Notes: Years after KH2, the trio is attempting to help some old friends out of a jam. It’s not easy to race when you’ve been poisoned, the local gang is doing everything to stack the odds against you, and the coordinators keep stepping up the schedule.
This is crossed with Jak X; Combat Racing.
They were gathered in what Riku had dubbed 'the war room' when the news came.
The Kras City Championship coordinators had snuck in a round of 'Capture the Power Cell' at the worst possible time- and the news came by the worst possible carrier.
"G.T. Blitz here, coming to you live with our Dark Yakkow entrants!"
Sora blinked, winced a little at the volume of his bright pink suit and neon-orange vest. Kairi grabbed his hand before he could shield his eyes and complain about the glare. Sora squinted and bore it.
"So, Jak," the commentator smiled at his hovercam, walking over to the most notorious of the racers, "what's your reaction to the surprise race? You've had a tough couple of circuits these past two days- will you make the entry time?" His camera panned over Torn's bandaged head and the ceramic cast Samos was wrapping over Ashelin's 'lead foot'.
G.T.'s smile grew wider and Riku gave Sora a narrow look. The younger Keyblade Master nodded tightly. The commentator was enjoying this. What he was saying made him happy.
"This isn't the first time they've announced a surprise event!" G.T. announced to the viewers. "Scheduling has been even tighter this past week than the Championship held during the Metal Head invasion four years ago, when the racers kept getting eaten!"
There was a collective wince, and Daxter cringed.
"After all," G.T. continued, "You're already set to participate in a Circuit Race in Haven, Sig, a Death Race in Spargus, and even Rayn is coming out onto the track for a Freeze Rally-" the camera panned to each of them as G.T. went down the list. His tone became jovially sympathetic. "Who will you get to cover this race?"
Keira stood up, hands clenched into fists- and Samos pulled her back down, muttering how no daughter of his would risk life and limb in that melee.
Kairi looked at Sora.
Sora looked at Riku.
Riku looked at Kairi.
They all grinned.
"It's another Gold Metal, and another step closer to the Grand Prix," G.T. was reminding them. "And when every race could be your last- a true racer needs to make every opportunity count! But with all of your teammates tied up, how will you fill the three-racer requirement for this event?"
G.T. finally turned his microphone in Jak's direction. The hovercam swiveled to look at him. Twenty thousand viewers held their breath as the drama of G.T.'s speech and their desire for Jak's team to win melded and became one single, gut-twisting burst of anxiety.
The hero smiled and looked at something off-screen.
"They'll do it."
The hovercam caught the commentator's momentary glare, then settled on the image of two young men and a woman standing tall and confident on the other side of the room.
Kairi smiled, Sora gave a 'victory' sign and a wide grin, and Riku crossed his arms over his chest, smirking.
"Well!" G.T. said brightly, jaw set and grin fixed as the camera turned back to him, "more new entrants! We'll see if they have what it takes to roll with the big boys," his grin widened, and his voice dipped, "and we'll see what their opponents have in store for them."

Date: 2007-11-27 02:57 am (UTC)i love how you convey the trio's personalities without them saying a single word - especially when the camera closes in on them.
(but now i just wish i could see the race! i think jak's competitors will be very surprised. :3)
