Their sleep-over/camping out plan was a great idea, Sora muses with a tired but oh-so-content grin. He watches his friends, Riku and Kairi, slumber by the dancing light of the slowly dying embers their campfire spits out.
They’d talked and joked and laughed well into the night, out here on the beach with the lull of the constant ocean waves and the crackle of flames as their small fire ate at the wood it was fed. Only when Kairi began to nod off in earnest, Riku finally suggested they all try and get some much needed sleep; promptly setting the example. Sora had been somewhat surprised by how swiftly his older friend could succumb to slumber if he chose to.
With a slight frown he worries his lip. Most likely it is just the relief from stress and hardship that is catching up with the silver haired teen. He himself is still quite awake, mainly because he has pushed his body and mind past the point of succumbing to sleep hours ago.
Closing his eyes briefly, he is entertained by the cool salt-scented wind fluffing up his hair, caressing his face, and the soothing sound of the waves breaking upon the shore. The only thing that has been missing on a perfect night such as this one, he realises – opening his eyes once more to take in the sight of countless stars in the deep blue skies – is sea-salt ice cream. One of these days, he’ll have to convince Kairi to help him try and recreate the tangy frozen delight.
He observes the other two, satisfied and at peace with himself and the multiverse. His eyes stray over to Kairi’s slight form and his mouth walks away with him in a whisper.
“I hope you’ll draw this someday; us being like this.” He speaks without conscious thought, or maybe he isn’t the one speaking at all. He doesn’t know why he must tell her this either, as if hoping that somehow his words will reach her in her dreams. “I want to remember this; I want you to remember this forever…”
The only answer he gets is a soft sigh as she shifts in her sleep. He watches her ‘till dawn; at times alert on his self-imposed shift, at times he nods off, but he knows in his heart that his body hasn’t been sleeping.
He keeps watching the shadows shift and play over her features as the sky gradually lights up in hues of pink and orange. She is a treasure, reverently touched by her surroundings of light. If she is a sparkling treasure, then he is her keeper; keeping watch over her so she won’t feel lonely anymore; not even in her dreams.
