The sun, having lost its fiery battle against night, was lulled into a quietly sweet slumber as the sea rose to catch it softly in outstretched arms. Sitting before the ocean, arms curled around his own form, eyes reflexive of the sea dimmed, turned contemplative, as a mouth slightly hard from years of adventure softened from his thoughts.
The breeze, slightly chilled by the oncoming night, ruffled through hair that gleamed nearly chestnut in the dying light; it twirled, once, twice, thrice, about his form before fleeing gleefully towards the next target, standing by the edge of the island, silently watching the young teen relive his memories.
“Sora.”
The one word greeting had the cinnamon haired teen turning. Lips curved into a smile automatically, welcoming and embracive. Stepping beside this man who should have been a boy still, Riku settled onto the familiar tree with his best friend, staring into the rapidly darkening sky.
The war—their adventure—had robbed them of their childhood. Their near immediate drift from one another, being pitted into two opposing sides…Kairi.
“I was just thinking,” Slipping out of his thoughts, the platinum haired boy turned towards Sora. His eyes held the same thoughtfulness as before, lips pursed slightly as he mused, “About how much I had missed this. Sitting here in our play island and watching the sunset.”
Riku smiled. “Yea, those were the days.”
“What do you suppose things would have been like if we never went on our adventure?”
So Sora had been asking himself the same question. Riku didn’t look. Training his eyes resolutely on the darkened sea, he shrugged. “Became a heartless, maybe?”
“Suppose we never fought in the war…”
“Do you regret it?”
Sora quickly shook his head. Those eyes turned onto him, coruscating even within this evening light. “No, of course not. But, sometimes I just wonder why it all happened.”
Riku smiled. Such a wistful voice, what a sweet voice despite all. “We never would have met Leon and Cloud and them, the King. We might never have understood Kairi’s past, your bravery…”
And Riku’s feelings.
Perhaps Sora had read his mind. Or it could have been the slight hedge in his voice when he said it last. Shifting a bit, the brunette settled himself comfortably onto Riku’s chest, sighing when he felt those muscled arms twine themselves around his somewhat slight frame. Of course Riku was right.
Riku was always right. “Except for when you’re wrong,” Sora added out loud, delighted that it was understanding that flashed across those aquamarine eyes.
“But I’m more often right, than wrong.”
It was a soft smile. Sora briefly wondered if Riku really understood just how beautiful his smiles were. Tilting his head upward, lashes fluttering close as a feather-soft kiss brushed against his own lips, he too, smiled.
“Look to the future, Sora.”
Because our past actions, both good and bad, were but a guide to this moment. And this…this makes everything worth it.
