Title: Heatstroke
word count: 258
spoilers:None unless you haven't everything through the first half of KH II...
Once, summer had been easy to define. Endless days of sun and sand. The subdued lull of the ocean in the background. Sword fights and sand castles until the last rays of the sunset began to leech the warmth from their faces. They would spend so long in the open air that by the end of the week they weren't even tanning anymore.
Those early images of summer always shifted as time passed, by mid-season it was all about the idea shady spot as temps climbed into three digits. Long lazy days spent full of idle chatter and half-naps until the shadows stretched in long lines and there was a break in the oppressive heat.
Nowadays though, summer had a completely different meaning, for Kairi at least. She stood there on that long stretch of sand from daybreak to sunset. Waiting, waiting, always waiting. The others tried to coax her away; promises of malls and movies and actual lunch, but she stayed resilient. Even when the hot sand scorched her feet. Even when Selphie had to rub soothing slave into her blistered skin, she waited.
Until everything changed and those bright blue eyes flickered, flickered, faded away and she couldn't recall the way he laughed or his smile or the feel of his hand in hers. Kairi left the beach then, with the sun still high in the sky; the only witness to her sudden panic as fear clenched her heart and she couldn't recall why she was staring all alone at the endless ocean.
I can't say I'm one hundred percent pleased with the way I ended this, but anything else felt like I was dragging it out too long..
