The morning after they returned to the Islands, Riku lay in bed feeling curiously hollow. It was…surreal, to be here wrapped up in his thick comforter watching the first golden rays of sunlight streaming in through the window when for the past two years he'd been living in the Darkness. He no longer felt comfortable in the simple, innocent world of his childhood, not with the memory of that taint on his soul.
He slipped out of bed and walked down to the beach just as the sun fully cleared the horizon. He wasn't surprised when only minutes later warm hands reached out to twine with his, anchoring him and keeping the emptiness at bay.
"Where do we go from here?" he murmured softly, and he knew from the firm squeezes to his hands that they understood.
"We don't need to know just yet," said Kairi, sweet and reassuring, followed by Sora's enthusiastic, "We're together again; that's all that matters!"
The morning sun made everything golden and bright, and Riku let himself smile. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be all right.
