wordcount: 523
notes: did you know that you can get on to blocked sites through peachfloss.com? did you know i'm such a dork that, when i learned this, i only thought of how happy i was i could write for kh_drabble again? hahaha. also i have no idea what room 317 might reference. but de_yaten forgives me riiight?
The Destiny Islands only had one school, and it housed everyone from grades 1 to 12 easily. Kairi's favorite room was the library. Everyday during her recess, she would bang open the door, catching the sign that proclaimed this room 317 out of the corner of her eye, and feel proud that she knew it was so because this was the third floor and the 17th room.
The big kids were still in class at that time. and there was no librarian. So she was free to explore the room, to slowly puzzle out words like ANALYSIS and INTRODUCTION from the spines of books she saw as hard but not impossible, to watch the sea from the window heaving great waves up and down, and to see the ghosts.
Well, she amended to herself, 'ghosts' wasn't quite right. She would run her hand over a set of books and know that the last kid to use them had grown up to be a doctor. Another girl had sat on this chair years ago; she had married at seventeen over her family's objections. In this shelf a boy and a girl had kissed, and, her favorite, found on a book whose cover proclaimed it to be TWILIGHT, this boy had grown up to marry another boy.
Some ghosts were silly and some were boring, but she never thought that there could be a bad one, or one that was more than a sudden flash of knowledge, or a brief picture in her mind...until she was crouched at a low shelf, looking for a book she could read easily, and put her hand into a great, shadowed section of the shelf.
A series of terrible, hideous images flashed through her consciousness. This girl had become a lawyer, and just yesterday an old client had murdered her. This boy's father had touched him, in the badway Kairi had heard a little about, and when he grew up, he had done the same to his son. She tried to wrench her hand free, but the shadow had become very black, and sticky. It was spreading, she saw, horrified, gaining power from her hand and then she saw -
a girl on an ancient hall's stone platform. A girl who looked like she was dead. A girl with limp, dirty hair spalyed all over face, a girl with limp red hair who was the first future ghost Kairi had ever known, the future ghost of
her.
The dark spot was hissing words. "We are your father and your mother and we are lonely, Kairi, we are your court and your people and we need a queen, Majesty --"
She ripped her hand free with a terrified strength. The dark was gone. A textbook with the hard words, BEGINNING ALGEBRA, stared blandly ahead.
She stood slowly and walked to the door. She had shut it gently, for fear of waking that shadow, and had gone three steps away before she chanced a glance back. For a moment, she felt silly. The door was brown. The letters LIBRARY glittered on it in gold. The sign said Rm. and then the numbers 3,1,7, were -- were not bright green but black and dull. They were sinister and spreading over the sign like ink and for a second Kairi thought she saw a long-ago library inside that ink, another library that had betrayed her.
She turned and she ran from Room 317.
