Challenge: [169] Protection
Title: Fly the Nest
Word Count: 363
Note: I think this is a bit AU/pre-KH
"Momma, why does that bird bring home worms?" He leaned against the counter, peering out the window at a small bird's nest tucked neatly between two branches, where a bird sat perched with a worm dangling in its beak.
"Because, honey, she has to feed her babies so they'll grow up big and strong," she replied as she plucked him off the counter, dropping him into his kitchen seat where a bowl of steaming chowder sat before him. "Just like how I feed you so you'll grow up big and strong."
~~~
"Momma, why did that bird cover up her babies?" The moon hung low in the sky, enveloping the night in a silvery blanket.
"Because, honey," she replied as she herded him back into bed, "she has them safely tucked in bed where they are warm and safe." She kissed him lightly on the tip of his nose and ruffled his hair passionately. "Just like how you are tucked safely in your warm bed."
~~~
"Momma... why is that bird crying?" The nest is vacant, save for a few scraps of feathers swaying in the wind, caught precariously between the woven reeds. A few branches off, a lone bird perched, facing the rising sun.
"Because, honey," she wrapped her arms around him, embracing him in a hug, "her babies have grown up and flown the nest. They're out having big adventures of their own and she can no longer protect them. Just like... how you will... someday..." She trailed off in silence.
Eyes glazed with childhood innocence widened in surprise. "I would never do that, Mamma! I won't leave you and make you sad!"
She held him closer, but said no more.
~~~
The rippling surface of the sea carried the warm rays of the rising sun. Sora trailed along the edge of the beach, the end of his Keyblade running a single score across the wet sand. The waves lapped around his legs, soaking the hem of his pants, but he did not care.
He stares out into the horizon, his mind drifting across the expanse to where perhaps she waited still, with a warm welcome home... an embracing hug... a steaming bowl of chowder...
"I'm sorry, Mom... I flew the nest after all."
Favourite paaaaart. I love it when people write the families of the characters, because it brings a huge new element to the difficulty of leaving their home. Poor Sora's mum, really. ♥
