Theme: [176] Very Important Person
Title: Hearts and Masks
Word Count: 539
Notes: Because this was the first thing I thought of for this prompt. And then I just had to write it.
There were stranger worlds out there. All worlds had their quirks, the little things that took Sora by surprise when he wasn’t thinking about them (like bowing to the Emperor in the Land of Dragons, good thing Mulan had stepped in before he got his head cut off for that accidental disrespect). But some worlds were definitely stranger than others. Like Wonderland, for example, which had yet to be displaced from the top of Sora’s list of strange places. It was hard to get much stranger than that place, with its psychedelic colors and complete disregard of the laws of physics and gravity.
But this place was giving even Wonderland a run for its money.
The grungy city didn’t look too strange, at first. But the buildings twisted in odd ways and the architecture defied logic and general good sense whenever you weren’t looking at it. Then there was that one street full of fish.
Meanwhile, there were heartless lurking around every corner but no one seemed to worried about them. Sure, they ran whenever the shadows lunged for them, but they had about the same reaction to the strange purple cat things.
And everyone wore a mask.
It wasn’t just wearing a mask either. He’d worn a mask in Halloween Town. But here, the masks didn’t seem optional. He wasn’t sure what was under the masks. If anything. And if he wanted to find out.
One of the masked people had attached himself to their group. They met Valentine, as he called himself, while fighting heartless in a back alley with a violinist and the charlatan had escaped with them when the darkness proved to be more than they could handle. But since he had also helped them escape from the first purple cat thing they met, none of them minded much. Not to mention that Sora thought riding flying books was one of the best uses for heavy tomes that he had found on any world.
“So the books are great and all. But, uh, who are you?”
“I’m a very important man, you know. I’ve got a tower. A great tall one. We’ve got a scullery and everything,” the odd masked man said.
“Riiiight,” Sora said, exchanging looks with Goofy and Donald. “And where is this tower?”
“We’re not exactly... on speaking terms right now,” Valentine said. “We had a bit of an argument. Some words were exchanged.”
“Gawrsh,” Goofy chimed in. “Maybe you should apologize.”
“It wasn’t my fault! I don’t see why I should apologize! A Valentine never apologizes!” he declared.
“But if you both said mean things, then you should apologize for that,” Donald agreed.
Sora nodded. “Yeah, friends are more important than saying you’re sorry!”
Valentine looked at them all strangely. “Right... You just think that. If you don’t mind me, I’ve got to go find someone who can juggle since you got my last one killed. Not easy to find jugglers, you know. Fiddle players are a dime a dozen, but a good juggler...”
They watched his retreating form, then exchanged a shrug. “Come on, guys,” Sora said. “Let’s go find this charm everyone keeps talking about.”
