Theme: [179] Conflict
Title: End Game
Word Count: 476
Notes: Xenmas-centric. Me and my love of chess. >>
In the beginning, there were two sides. White and black. No other shade or hue ever came in the middle of their raging battle.
Xenmas always considered himself as the high king of the black pieces.
There were the pawns, the lesser Nobodies, who were happy to be following their leader, hiding the hope that they too would become as high as the exalted queen that stood by his side. But they were slaughtered, one by one, falling like dead plants onto the ruthless ground they stood on. But the king didn’t care, for that’s what they were made for. (The queen was happy, after all; why did he need to worry about simple tools?)
There were the knights, nimble figures which the king set out for the purpose of drawing the white side further into his traps. But one of the knights was lost when he was beguiled into thinking that the king was once part of their side, and the other stood uselessly at the edge of the board, allowing the enemy’s pieces to pass by him without batting an eyelash. (The king gritted his teeth, declaring the knight a traitor to all who could hear him.)
There were the rooks, the powerhouses that leapt into the fray with cunning words and even more cunning tactics, and yet, they too were drowned within the rush of power that came from the white army. (The king shuffled anxiously on his white square.)
There were the bishops, the tools which the king had the most confidence in, which set out to eliminate the white king directly. One of the bishops made the fatal mistake of cornering the white queen, and the white king cut him down with such a fury that had never been seen before. The other bishop, unfortunately, was unsuccessful at toying with the white group and received the same fate. (The black king averted his eyes from the scene to stare once more at his beautiful queen.)
So, there was only king and queen left. (The remaining black knight had somehow put himself in a position where he most certainly would be defeated, and had perished with a smile on his face.)
And the white army didn’t just walk calmly towards them. No, they rushed, stampeded, with the force of all the strange strength of their hearts that the black side never had.
But the black king never backed down. He stood stolidly, certain that he and his heart-shaped queen would overcome that impossible army. It was not until he turned around, noticing his queen had been destroyed by a lowly bishop that he realized that everything, everything he ever worked for, was gone.
(Before he made the final strike, the white king, also known as the Keyblade Master, whispered a single word that hovered in the air like an ominous sigh.)
“Checkmate.”
