challenge: [179] conflict
title: intruders
wordcount: 184
notes: things that are conflicting = balloons in the rain (also, mods? i was wondering if you could put someone on making the banner from challenge 150? unless it was posted and i didn't see, which is mad possible!)
The balloons were pink and cherry red when they drifted through the black hole with the rest of their world, and their strings intertwined in the dark. They only unraveled when they floated out, into the City That Never Was.
The neon signs buzzed on, and off, and their harsh blues, yellows, greens, painted the passing balloons into a discordant array of colors.
A crashed truck revved once, twice, and almost caught. It's headlights flashed on, and turned the balloons into dark circles in white light.
Heavy raindrops splattered over their surfaces, leaving dirty smudges over their plastic surfaces, and the air pressure dropped and lifted without a warning, choking them, forcing them into weird shapes. The pink one's skin bulged out too far and it burst; the red one's air was forced out of it and it withered pathetically.
They fell together. A TV with a web of cracks on it's screen blared into static, and shut off when the balloons hit the gutter.
They near each other, but they were turning gray and black, and their strings weren't together.
And the city went back to sleep.
