Title: Prelude, Premonition
Word Count: 577
Other: Because I've always wondered where that weird voice-thing at the beginning of KH1 came from. And I still don't know, so if anyone has a clue and cares enough to enlighten me, please feel free. :) Spoilery for both games, I guess. Also- I think I'm incapable of writing short and/or non-serious drabbles! :P
You will live.
Strings of salty hair in your eyes, limbs an aching, tangled mess- you hadn't meant to get so close to the edge of the dock, Mom, you promise; it's just that you'd seen Riku out there, and, well, if he can do it...
Cold, dark blue surrounds you for a long time. Your lungs strain against the pressure-
until something grips your leg, harshly, then jerks. You cling to whatever it is that saved you, sucking in gaspy mouthfuls of sweet air.
Riku's blue-green eyes glare hard at you, salt and sand and strands of silver smeared across his six-year-old cheeks.
-
You will dream.
In your nightmares, the world is painted black against white. You're running; there's only emptiness behind you, and a great, yawning void lies in the distance, beckoning you ahead.
You wake up, shaking. Your heart is pounding so hard that you can hear it banging against your chest. Even is beside you, and in the glare of the overhead lights his mouth forms a mangled, fuzzy mess.
"What did you see?" he's demanding.
"Still nothing," you eventually answer, the metal lab table pressing cold against your bare skin.
The stain of disappointment you catch in your own voice disgusts you more than you would care to admit.
-
You will fight.
You swing your sword as hard as you can, but Riku still deflects it- easily, it looks like, and he's grinning.
"The bad guys aren't supposed to win!" You shout at him, indignant.
Kairi waits in the sidelines, patiently, because that's what princesses do in the fairytales. Will the valiant knight be able to rescue her, or will she remain in the clutches of the dark prince?
You have to be the one to save her, you think, and you open your mouth to insist on this fact emphatically.
"What's fair is fair," Riku argues, growing irritated.
You beat him the next time you spar, however.
It doesn't occur to you that maybe he's losing on purpose.
-
You will learn.
You still remember the pang of nervous excitement you had felt the first time you discovered it. The Door sat deep down in the castle's underground, and- when it sang out to you- you believed that its voice was the most beautiful thing that you had ever heard.
You don't tremble when your fingers splay against its surface, but your heartbeat quickens in your breast. Again, it calls out to you, and you understand:
It has to be you. The clarity is astounding.
Everything you've done so far, to lead you up to this point, is so very, very right.
You stand there for a long time, touching the Door as you listen. While it never falls completely silent, its song eventually dwindles down to a soft, wordless hum.
Exhausted, you slump against it.
You know what you must do.
Yes, you promise.
Soon.
-
You've been having these weird thoughts, lately. Rafts and keys and monsters- maybe there are other worlds out there-
and Riku and Kairi are there, too, but you can never reach them as you toss and turn fruitlessly in your sleep.
You are the one who will open the door-
Sora wakes up to a storm outside of his window, one worse than any he's ever seen.
-
Xehanort sits up, disoriented.
He takes in the unfamiliar, rain-drenched city around him, and his lips don't smile when he touches a hand to his hollow chest.
