challenge: [181] watch
title: just a little touched
wordcount: 491
notes: riku is craaaazy, riku is when rockwell + todd bowden had a baby. riku is also mad fun to write about!

It just - Riku wasn't hallucinating. None of that shit. Just...cautious. You know. He'd seen a lot. He had to be ready for everything.

But he was brushing his hair and something in the corner of the mirror moved. It blinked. But when he turned, ready, there was just the wall, empty and blank and definitely not blinking.

He walked outside, and the trees rustled secretly. He knew there was no one in them - no lurking dark, no little spies, not in Twilight Town. He still threw a rock, and was unnaturally relieved when nothing happened.

He's not crazy, he tells himself. He's not.

It was harder to believe it, when he was urgently taking a black crayon to Namine's sketches and nervously scribbling long, jagged slashes, blindfolding the eyes. Taking out every eye.

Harder still when there was a tap on his shoulder and he almost screamed. She smiled blankly and her blue eyes were too big. "There's nobody here," she said, and he worries that she means that in two ways.

"Just being careful," he whispered, not knowing it was out loud. "What if there was something? Better be safe..."

"It's all in your head," said DiZ, and his brown, scabbed lips twitched. "I saw things, too. I saw things, in the dark.'"

Eyes? Riku wanted to ask. Eyes? Of people mocking you, or of guys that you let down? Or maybe just the cold, demonic eyes of monsters. But he bit his lip instead, horrified that he had just been talking to himself. That wasn't normal.

"But--" he stopped himself this time, and reflected silently. It was just a phase, right? But the e...no, but the nothing. Just...he was sorta jumpy. He'd get it back. Everything would get under control. Everything would be cool. There was nothing.

Until the next part of the plan.

Until he came to the city, dark and unreal and insane. The city with it's black windows and infinite winding, claustrophobic streets. He stood at the tunnel in-between, and he sized up the city. And, he thought, maybe he knew it. Maybe he had been right about the . Maybe it had been spying on him the whole time.

He grinned. Oh, he knew how it was. There was nothing cool about this, but there was nothing he couldn't handle, now that he got it.

Just maybe, the Dark City was asleep. but when he delved farther into it, looking over his shoulder every third step, he would know it wasn't dead. It would come alive, sure...and maybe there were ghosts in every window, too. Maybe when he saw them, they would wake, and see him.

But maybe he wouldn't risk it. If he didn't see anything, there wouldn't be anything. Yeah. Eyes lie, right? Or minds. But maybe he'd take care of those eyes. Nothing crazy, no gouging them out or sewing them shut. That was the insanity the city's ghosts would push on him. Just - a blindfold.

Just - until they all stopped watching him.

You know, after all the shit Riku's been through, it would make sense for him to act like this. Poor kid. :P

I just love everything about this- the idea, the execution, the dialogue, man oh man. This is all so good, but I especially love the line about Namine's statement implying two separate things. Wonderful stuff!
