challenge: [186] black and white
title: Coated
wordcount: 324
notes: sora and co see one thing but you know they were looking for it.
an it is not shapes in za zebra coat, but i am hopin someone funnier than i does write something like that
Battle with the Huns, battle with the whoever, Sora says calmly. We've been fightin' for ages now. We'll be fine.
Goofy and Donald agree, confident and calm, and none of them understand why Mu-- Ping is looking away and Shang is looking striaght at them.
"Something you need to see," the Captain says, seriously, and the wonder trio follows meekly.
The sword's blade is the first thing they see, but the doll is what Sora remembers. When he brushes the snow from her face, the crisp, clean winter smell is overpowered by some stink he can't identify. The eyes are wooden, but perfectly preserved. They are painted black.
The village beyond the memorial's hill is also a black ruin.
Mulan is saying how no one survived; Shang isn't saying how his father was one of them.
When Sora places the dolly back, he feels convicted, and good. The coming fight is the right one. They'll kill the- the monsters - who did this. Yeah. They sure-as-heck-would. Anyone who would do this...the poor dead doll eyes symbolized to him the eyes of the burned people, and Shang nods, grimly, when Sora says this thought out loud.
They left the place, somber and quiet. No joking bravado for the dream team, not now, when they were on an avenging mission.
The doll's pointless wooden eyes collected snow in it's rims, and if Sora had looked back, he would have thought those white rims looked like tears. Tears for the dead. More snow fell, obscuring the toy, which was really fabric and thread and wooden eyes, any intelligence or significance the long-ago owner had imbued in it gone, ambiguous...or meaningless.
The stink, which Sora would later identify as gunpowder and rotting fabric, was covered, too. It would rest weakly underneath the clean pure smells of snow...until the doll that had errantly betrayed the village was uncovered again, and the black eyes and smell, so close to dirt, and decay, inspired another group to war.
