title: necessary steps
wordcount: 207
notes: you know how you start out writing about namine and come up with mickey mouse? neither do i, but such is life.
There are locks on every door - small ones, molded and painted to blend in - but locks all the same. Strong locks.
Of course, they won't keep out Heartless, but Cid and Merlin's machines takes care of it. They gave him several gratis, and he took them gratefully.
They didn't ask why he needed them.
There is a dreamcatcher on the wall of his room, obscenely big and funny-looking by daylight, but in the early sunrise, he can the see trapped, squirming black nightmares sent by who-knows-what-villains.
His best gal is very good about these measures. She tells him that the greatest rulers are faced with the most, and the most vicious, enemies. But he knows she's waiting for the day he can say, Minnie, we don't need those barriers, because I know we're safe!
He would say this in a chipper, cheerful voice. Why not? On that day, the King would be free. Maybe not even King Mickey - maybe just Mickey who used to exasperate Yen Sid more then any other apprentice ever had.
He thinks that will be a great day. But when he closes his eyes to go to sleep, the crisscrossed strands of the dreamcatcher echo in the dark. First green, then blue, then fading to black...like they have done for years now.
