Challenge: [197] Second Chance
Title: On Liars
Word Count: 582
Notes: Written during a storm on my vacation.
He knows he doesn’t deserve their sympathies. A smile from Kairi, her eyes always understanding, forever accepting. A joke from Sora, something about how long his hair has gotten or about how he should stop being so tall. They’re well-meaning. They intend to bring some sort of relief to his contemplative mind.
But the atrocities he committed are far too many, and he knows he’ll never be able to atone for them.
Riku lays back on a bed of sand, staring up at the sky that so long ago swept them from the island. A few clouds linger in an otherwise pristine sky. He’s glad the light obscures the starscape. Stars make him think too much, and lately, thinking has been dangerous.
Sora and Kairi are your best friends and the past is behind you and they don’t blame you for any of it anymore and you need to let go and--
“Riku?” Kairi’s voice is faint and far away.
He sits up, feigning a carefree smile as she and Sora come into view. “Uh, hey guys, what’s up?”
“Sora says you’ve been brooding again,” Kairi crosses her arms across her stomach in mocked sternness. “Have you been brooding, Riku?”
“Brooding?” Riku construes his face into an expression of confusion. He’s never been particularly good at lying. Telling untruths, sure, but not lying.
“Kairi, he thinks he can play dumb,” Sora smirks.
“Guys, I wasn’t--”
“Yeah, okay,” Kairi’s expression is incredulous. “Because you never dwell on the past or all the things we’ve forgiven you for a hundred times over.”
Riku stands, turning away from his friends. “I know it’s redundant to say, but I’m sor-- Ouch! What was that for?”
Sora withdraws the hand that, only a moment ago, had punched Riku squarely in the shoulder. “That was for being an idiot.”
“How is caring about my friends--”
“We know you care about us,” Kairi interrupts. “So. Stop. Brooding.” She hits him with her handbag at every word.
“Hey…” Riku finally manages the semblance of a chuckle. “So now it’s okay to abuse your friends?”
“Only when they’re being unreasonable,” Sora shrugs.
Riku looks down at the sand, the grains sinking between his rarely-bare toes. For the moment, it’s almost as it was two years ago, back before their island had been obliterated by his own hand, before Kairi’s heart had been viciously ripped from her chest, before Sora had--
“Riku, knock it off!” Kairi attempts a very unsuccessful tackle, only managing to plow into Riku and knock herself to the ground.
“Knock what off?” He laughs, helping her to her feet.
“You know. You were doing it again,” accuses Sora with a mocking scowl. “You more than made up for everything, and you know it.”
“But I might as well have been evil. You know what I--”
“Misguided,” explains Kairi. “Never evil. C’mon, Riku. We’re finally all back together. And if some new catastrophe strikes the worlds, we’re going to stay that way. All three of us. Got it?”
He meets their eyes, always so accepting and forgiving. For once he receives their words with a smile, genuine this time, not some badly-covered ruse to get them to leave him to his thoughts. As he walks beside them, Kairi on his right and Sora to his left, he knows their severed friendship has been restitched, even if the threads are a bit tangled and hasty. At times like this, he wonders if they were ever undone in the first place.

I love trio-centric!
Also, Kairi hitting him with her bag makes me think old people, and 'can you help me find my werthers originals'. xD;
