Challenge [197] Second Chance
Title: Kairi Says
Word Count: 498
Spoilers: Uhh, for a certain KH1 game mechanic, I guess
Notes: I can't be the only person that did this in-game. Also, hi! I submitted entries here once upon a time. (:

As a child, Kairi could only think of – or she dreamed of, perhaps – two distinct memories from her life previous to the one on Destiny Islands. The first was of a man whom Kairi suspected to be a scientist telling her he wished to model a science project after her: “An embodiment of youth, if you will,” he had said, “That essence, and all the emotions associated with it, constructed entirely with the power of science.”

The other memory was of a game she’d renamed to “Kairi Says,” out of the fact that not only was her name not Simon, but she couldn’t think of anybody named as such. The children she met on the play island had never heard of Kairi Says, nor the generic name, as they spent much of their days playing tag, fishing, or play-fighting. They were, much to her excitement, quite eager to learn.

“Okay, Kairi says… hop on one foot!” A pause, then the sound of small feet pitter-pattering against the sand. “Kairi says… Clap your hands!” A wild round of applause.

She had them this time! “Now stop, and do a headstand!” The noise dwindled, almost halting completely, as the children paused to watch one offending kid flop to the ground and struggle to turn his body upside down.

“Sora, she didn’t say Kairi Says,” Riku pointed out. He was clapping the loudest of them all. “You’re out now!”

“But I’ve never done a headstand before!” Sora chirped back, promptly losing his balance and crashing back down to the warm sand. He started laughing. “Kairi’s telling us to do fun things, when we’re not supposed to be doing them! So, I get another chance, right? ‘Cause I was just doing something fun!”

Sora’s logic was astounding sometimes. Riku opened his mouth to argue, but Kairi interrupted by waving her hands a little. “It’s okay, we’re just practicing! Next time, we’ll call people out.” Riku’s face darkened, not one to lose arguments, but he continued clapping his hands. He wasn’t one to lose anything in general, after all, and he certainly wasn’t planning on losing a game of Kairi Says.

“Okay… Kairi says, do a headstand!” A group of children toppled to the ground, peals of laughter escaping to the morning sky.

---

Sora brushed away beads of sweat sliding down his forehead, grumbling; it was never this muggy back home… It didn’t cross his mind to stop using his new fire spell on the Heartless, either: the appeal hadn’t yet worn off, it was just fun, and besides, those little munny-thieving monkeys deserved it.

So when a small, white Heartless peered at him curiously from behind a crate, scooted out closer to him, and immediately hunched over, pantomiming heat exhaustion, Sora reacted with the first thing that came to mind:

Fire!

The Heartless waved its arms, infuriated, before twisting its body, and sinking back into Darkness. Sora vaguely wondered if he was ever going to get a second chance.

Some of them were so strange. They made no sense. Aero- it spins? Huh? and Stop, where it freezes. I would think that if you had to cast Stop it would be moving super-fast, or something. All Stop would do would be keep it frozen longer.
