*----*----*
An antennae wiggled at him as eerily luminous yellow eyes shifted towards him. He stared for a moment, more in quiet awe than horror, and a fascinated smile began to trace his lips, faint and almost…hesitant. And he was not known for being hesitant, but this was such a delicate situation.
Warmthwarmthwarmth, the creature cried, something made of the darkest shadows, stealing the breadth of light away from his torch so that it blew out without any sort of caress of wind. He was left to stare into those glowing eyes, which were now focused on him intently. They were the only thing that he could see.
His lips parted in a silent ‘o’. He knelt slowly, never minding that it was becoming so cold he shivered a little, teeth scraping against each other in a soft chatter. He swallowed against his dry throat as hundreds of thousands of the yellow eyes turned towards him, suddenly realizing that he was the only warm thing in this basement of the Bastion…
The only thing with a heart.
Heartheartheart.
These creatures… They did not have hearts. They were so cold that the largest, artic glacier of the Waterways could not begin to compare to their frigid little bodies. And those eyes… So blank, and yet at the same time, so utterly hungry…
“Heartless,” Ansem breathed.
Yes. They were the Heartless.
