Title: Rules of Succession
Word Count: 504
Notes: Figured it was about time for another Selphie drabble.
At age six, Selphie indisputably rules over Destiny Islands, the queen of an empire of sun and sand, waves and little boys. Being the only girl confers more joys than annoyances. Yes, she is often the slowest and the loser at arm-wrestling, but she can shriek in an octave even little Sora can’t hit, and the sheer mystery of girls overwhelms even Riku and allows her to give herself mystical female powers. (Her favorite memory of these days is still the afternoon she convinced the four of them that she could hear the voice of the ocean, and it demanded that they sacrifice Tidus. They built a pyre for him and everything.)
Two and a half months after her seventh birthday the sea brings her a much belated present: another girl. Riku and Sora find her and lead her to Selphie, who is holding court in the tree house with Tidus and Wakka. The little girl knows her name is Kairi, but not much else, and Selphie magnanimously allows her to be the princess, and gives her the seat to the right of her makeshift throne. Kairi doesn’t talk much at first, just watches with her huge blue eyes.
Then, just weeks later, Selphie rows out to the island with Tidus, and, yes, she helps row, because a good queen isn’t helpless or demanding, to find Riku and Sora and Kairi playing on the beach. She doesn’t say anything, because it’s not a big deal. Riku and Sora were always friends with each other first and the rest of them second, anyway. When she and Tidus land their boat and explain that Wakka has some sort of family obligation, the five of them start playing some incredibly complex game of pretend that lasts well past sunset.
Over the next few years their games change, and Selphie comes to the realization that princesses are the ones who get rescued by brave knights, not queens. Queens sit far above the mad bustle and wave their scepters. Selphie doesn’t complain, because she’s never really been a complainer, but slowly she and Tidus and Wakka spend less time with Riku and Sora and Kairi, until, one day, the three of them are gone.
What follows is a year and a half that Selphie can’t exactly recall, so one day, when Kairi is back for good, or so she tells them, Kairi sits Selphie down and explains. As a whole, not a lot of the story makes sense, but what Selphie distinctly remembers and understands is that Kairi is a Princess.
“So I was right, back when we were little, huh?” Selphie laughs and it’s three parts joy and one part sorrow.
“Yeah, yeah you were,” Kairi tells her, “about everything. I can’t imagine trying to deal with all four of them, you know. Sora by himself is almost too much to handle.” She laughs and the tension dissolves, and Selphie knows.
“You do have the purest heart on these islands.”
“Yes, but I learned from the best.”

Date: 2009-09-09 03:07 am (UTC)I laughed out loud. That is so awesome, and so like Selphie - it reminds me of the band for the festival. XD
And I love the friendship between them, and that underlying maturity of Selphie's. She always did have that endurance that gets missed because she's cheerful.
