Title: Shared Past
Word Count: 470
Spoilers: Some for 358/2 Days
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language.
Notes: He may be emotionally challenged, but he knows when you’re lying.
You figure the others, 'elders' must know what it's like. You don't know their history, not really. They keep it under the hood, but now and then Xaldin would trail off in the middle of a sentence and Vexen would nod. He could hear words in the silence, knew what III meant. Xigbar would reference something and some of the elders would smirk, and the others would scowl, and none would bother to fill in the blanks.
That’s when you’d glance at Saïx on the other side of the room and see his brow twitch, just slightly.
We're missing something.
Yep.
As much as Larxene rode Demyx' ass and kissed Marluxia's, you're pretty sure she didn't know them... before.
Numbers VI and up though- they did. Everyone knows, and no one talks about it. He decided you wouldn’t be as obvious. When it didn’t look like you had an alliance, you were available to join one. Saïx got in good with the big man- so it was down to you.
Nah- my past wasn’t anything special. Being snatched up by the Organization was weird though, huh? But good. Good we’re not alone. We’re safer if we’ve got allies, right? Got a purpose.
Isa was the ambitious one. Maybe that's how he survived. You're sure it's why he stayed behind while everyone else got the fuck out, running as far as they could from ground zero and the oncoming Heartless.
It's why you weren't found together. Why you didn't know what the hell was going on before Lexaeus found you heartless and confused in the middle of a burnt out basement. Why you didn't recognize Saïx (the blue hair was a change, seriously) before he recognized you.
That was an anchor at the beginning. (You'd say a source of comfort, but you don't have a heart, remember?) Knowing someone had your back, someone valued what you could do and was going to make sure you stuck around to do it.
But you're somewhere past the beginning now. Somewhere beyond the middle, but if at all possible, you'd prefer it wasn't the end. Or maybe you do. Maybe it's tiring as hell to keep this up. Protect the kids when they don't really seem to want your protection. When they're more at risk than you are because no one cares about keeping them both around, except you.
"It's not like I let her go. It's sure as hell not like I could stop her."
You think it'd be easier if he hadn't known you. If he didn't know you now, even though he says you've changed. Maybe you've got Xigbar fooled,
"I can't toss around blame after she knocked me on my ass."
but Saïx is looking at you with narrowed eyes that understand you perfectly. You understand them right back.
