Title: in deep places
Word Count: 312
Notes: Riku + second person = ♥
Only the little things change, things only you notice because only you know these four, know them better than they know themselves, and more fully. Kairi’s doodles during chemistry have a new, lifelike tinge about them, and one day, when Tidus brings a skateboard to the island, Sora takes his turn, a skates like he’s been doing it all his life. Well, for various definitions of the phrase, you think, but say nothing.
It doesn’t bother you, really, because in your own ways you and Naminé loved each other, and you and Roxas needed each other. So Sora has a newfound love of fire, and once, on a terrible day when you are just a few months returned, Kairi ducks her head in fear of your anger, Kairi, who saw through your darkness, once.
That day you break all the mirrors in your house, and your fists drip blood along the floor.
Even with the mirrors gone you still dream, of ponds and still oceans and plains of glass, where you can see the way your face ripples and shifts. You hear that voice in the back of your mind, even now, a hiss that does not sleep but shades your eyes and makes Naminé worry in a way the others don’t, because she understands, while Sora and Kairi are clumsy in their affection, Roxas cruel in the way that Sora would be, if he was still whole.
You learn to deal, in the way they learn to deal, and slowly the mirrors and the waters fade into memory. Still, some nights, when the moon or your heart is full, you see in your dreams a cave once dear to you, and a door. The voice speaks softly, a slow litany of fear:
It cannot it never will be no powers can you will not let you
You cannot close the door.
