Challenge: [206] Storm
Title: Innocence within the Maze

Word Count: 324
Rating/Warnings: P; if you squint your eyes, and jump on one foot, you may see some unacquainted boy-love. Or perhaps that’s just my own delusions.
Notes: First post from me, finally (Hello, hello). I’ve been struggling with the last few challenges, and always seemed to miss the deadline due to an overload of work and loss of concentration. But I made it this time! This is self-beta’d, so any and all errors are my own. (And I feel horrible for not knowing how to properly write ‘Heartless’ as a plural, ah ha).

His eyes were focused upwards at the few stars which were scattered along the blackened sky. Those few worlds overhead were probably struggling right now, struggling to survive against the darkness.

Perhaps Sora was amongst one of them. Perhaps he was fighting alongside the residents of some random world. Perhaps this was so, but he would never know.

Blinking once, his eyelids drooped slightly as his mood seemed to fall within the deepest pits of despair. Perhaps Sora was alone, unable to survive because he had no one guarding his back. No one; nope, no one like himself.

Of course there was no one like myself. I am his best friend, right?

Maybe he should go look for his best friend – go assist him.

…but he can’t. Not anymore.

He fell. He allowed himself to be consumed by the darkness which practically ruled his life now. There wasn’t anything he could do anymore, nothing he can do to be with Sora. He couldn’t even bring himself to fight alongside the younger teen.

Instead, he’d been forced to become the enemy. That definitely wasn’t what he wanted. He didn’t want to hurt the other – they were best friends, weren’t they?

But what sort of best friend was he? He had failed to be there for Sora. He had failed to help keep Kairi safe because the other would wish so. He had failed to reveal what was going on and who exactly was behind it. And when he had the opportunity to explain everything, he chose to ignore it. Instead of falling to his knees, on the verge of tears and loudly confessing to everything that had happened, he blocked it off. He fell even deeper within the darkness. His whole mind, his whole body, his whole soul was eaten up like it was a treat.

His heart became a candied treat for the horrible, demon-like Heartless.
And there was absolutely nothing he could do.

i usually post the poll around 6 pm pst the day the challenge ends - sometimes a bit before or after depending on my schedule.

& welcome to the community!

I think it has to do with the Japanese lack of pluralization for nouns. And it just kinda makes sense as "Heartless" rather than "Heartlesses".
