Nov. 23rd, 2009 11:17 pmChallenge: [208] Doors
Title: The Wizard isn't Worth it
Word Count: 584
Spoilers: For The Wizard of OZ and Wicked
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language.
Notes: Post-KH2. What have I said over and over? No one listened, so I made it the title. *dramatic pointing*
Third part after Beware of Low Flying Houses and Sorcerous Stereotyping. Thanks to
crimsoncookie for pre-reading, helping me knock this down two hundred words, and suggesting the title during the previous challenge. XD
Riku knew all about doors that shouldn't be opened.
He could name several.
That closet in his grandmother's house that dad claimed hid the bodies of naughty grandsons.
The passage, pitch black all but for a sliver of green creeping beneath the door and shining out the keyhole, that Maleficent had told him never to unlock. The perfectly ordinary-looking front doors of Buildings that Never Were, with bells that didn't chime, and porch lights that never went out.
The archway, god, of all the archways, in the Secret Place.
Then... there were doors that should have been opened a long time ago. Because someone should have put a stop to what went on behind them.
White-on-white in Castle Oblivion. Grey and key-coded before the Garden fell. Without hinges or knobs in the old mansion in Twilight Town and damnit, he'd closed the last himself and if the guilt never faded, that was okay. He didn't deserve that comfort.
This one happened to be a curtain, but the point remained.
"Please," the old man- who was in no way an actual wizard- mumbled, "I was afraid, and the people of OZ-"
"Probably had things well in hand before you ever showed up." Kairi ruthlessly trampled his platitudes.
"But they thought the balloon was magic! You met the Munchkins earlier- 'good witch, bad witch'; hardly anyone in this land has real magic." He smiled and spread his hands, beseeching.
"So you gave them cheap tricks and started to get rid of anyone who might find out the truth," Sora said flatly.
Riku wondered why he kept getting the sideways-glances. Did the wizard... no, con-man, think he seemed more sympathetic for the lack of threats? Maybe it was the 'bad witch' label.
"I had no choice!"
Riku couldn't hold back the sneer, and the con-man flinched. Everyone had a choice. Only people who couldn't accept responsibility for their actions tried to pretend otherwise.
"T-the people would have-"
"Would have what?" Riku's voice was low, but the self-named wizard flinched, as if he'd shouted. "Flayed the skin off your bones? Ripped you limb from limb? The people of OZ aren't that dark-hearted. The worst they would have done was held you in mild contempt for being ordinary. Oh, gasp," he deadpanned, "the horror."
"You don't know what they're like!" he cried, almost- no actually weeping. "What they've done to the Animals-"
Riku winced. The 'wizard' didn't get to wince, because Sora had already grabbed him by the collar and was throttling him... gently.
"Don't," Sora warned, "even try to say you had nothing to do with that."
"W-what," he managed despite restricted air flow, "what are you g-going to do?"
Sora released him with a little shove and flicked his hands, as if ridding himself of the old man's taint.
"We're going to make sure Dorothy survives the little suicide mission you sent her on," Kairi promised.
"Now, my dear," he whispered, "it was not a-"
"Shut up," Sora ordered.
The con-man shut up.
"Then," Kairi went on, politely, "since you have no real magic, and she wants to get home, I guess you'll just have to make a very noble sacrifice and return her there yourself."
The wizard didn't meet her gaze, but he nodded. He remained hunched and small in his chamber of buttons and lights and puppetry, looking defeated. They turned and left.
"Did you believe that?" Kairi muttered halfway down the corridor. Sora grimaced.
"Not for a second," Riku answered. "C'mon, let's find Glinda."
