Challenge : {209} Off-Kilter
Title : Quixotic
Word Count : 211
Notes : Probably gonna be one of two for this challenge, haven't decided yet.
“They're not going to eat him, are they?”
Axel scoffed, an easy, unconcerned sound. “Of course not.” The neophyte to his left hung his legs over the precipice's edge, eyelids sloped dramatically as he carefully surveyed the carnage down in the valley below. Once the Heartless got the scent of a live heart, they swarmed. “They're just smothering him, or something. Choking the light out.”
“I wonder how they do it. Remove the heart, I mean.”
Axel dropped down on his elbows and they watched with eyes both jaded with darkness and devoid of feeling. Unless you call this kind of curiosity feeling.
The heart in question was not some bloody muscle, but something fantastic and metaphorical that chimed and twinkled as it separated from its host, and for one deranged moment, Axel could feel himself hungering for it just as the mindless beast mob did. He figured if he were able to hold it, it would probably feel incredibly warm and powerful.
And for one deranged moment, Axel could really understand the point of looking for Kingdom Hearts, the fallible and somewhat extravagantly romantic reasoning behind it that made that much more sense as he watched the heart disappear into nothingness, and thought, What a waste.
