Challenge [211] Apology
Dec. 20th, 2009 08:47 pmChallenge: [211] Apology
Title: No Words
Word Count: 333
Summary: When he finds what what his apprentices have done, Ansem the Wise just doesn't know what to say.
Notes: Spoilers for KH II. My first attempt at a drabble, so any concrit would be greatly appreciated!
“W-what have you done?”
He can’t bear to look at any of them for more than a second. Braig. Dilan. Even. Aeleus. Ienzo. No matter how close the approximation, there’s something ultimately lacking in their faces, in their eyes, that makes them seem hideous to behold.
They seem to have no such problems watching him, mocking him with empty smirks and hollow grins. These aren’t the men he knew and worked with for so long, but they are the results of their treachery.
It’s Xehanort who steps forward- or rather, what Xehanort has become.
“Really,” he says, and his voice stings with sarcasm. “You would ask what we have done, when it was you who led us to do it?”
It’s as if the floor drops from under his feet. He’s right of course- even despite his change of heart (and how ironic that phrase seems now, faced with the shells of his apprentices), hadn’t he been the one to recruit each and every one of them, to inspire them to press further, to delve deeper? His simple words had come far too late. Radiant Garden was being torn down around them, and there was nothing he could do, because he had done nothing.
It was all his fault.
He looks Xehanort, or whoever he is now, straight in the eye and opens his mouth. Any words he might form stick in his throat, drowned by his guilt, scorched by the sense of betrayal. He’d tried, but it hadn’t been enough, and now it might never be.
He barely tries to fight as the man who was once Xehanort seizes the front of his shirt. The faraway screams of Radiant Garden ring in his ears as oblivion tumbles over the world, and all he can see are his once apprentices, their unnatural impassivity more than accusation enough.
He knows what he feels, but there are no words- no way- to express it.
And the next thing he knows, he is surrounded by darkness.
