Title: If on a winter's night
Wordcount: 409
Summary: A (slightly belated) New Year's drabble, featuring Riku, Sora and Kairi. They are so cute. (also, ugh title.)
Spending the Christmas holidays at Radiant Garden drains them in ways they didn’t know; Yuffie nearly bowls Sora over the minute they arrive, and even Aeris bursts with an energy, perpetually in motion but never rushed. Even Cloud nearly cracks a smile, which Tifa captures on film and promises to play every year from now on.
Now Kairi can’t even recall what gifts were given and received, only that Yuffie laughed until she cried and Cid tried to smother her with a couch cushion, and that Riku and Sora got in an eating competition that nearly ended in tears (hers, of hilarity). Also that Cloud and Leon had a sparring match that started to get a little too personal, and Merlin turned them both into frogs for an hour.
She doesn’t feel like too much of a loser, then, spending New Year’s at Merlin’s house, sitting on the couch and looking at the Christmas tree. They’re going to leave it up until next year, she laughs to herself. She thinks the tree must have been lonely, because the lights are glowing a lot brighter now that she’s here.
Riku and Sora are asleep, and Kairi’s going to tease them mercilessly for it, but they were also up at the crack of dawn for a mini tournament that Kairi only saw the finals of: Riku versus Sora, ending in a draw, thankfully. She can see them, curled together on the big bed they had been given (no questions asked, only a smile and a wink). Kairi eats another Christmas cookie; Aeris and Cid made enough to feed an army, really, too many even for Sora to finish, drinks her cider and reads the book Tifa gave her, about the Keyblades and the Princesses, highly theoretical, published pseudonymously by a man they all know.
Before Kairi realizes it, she’s drifting asleep, to the soft sound of snowfall and the fire crackling, and then there’s a heavy weight on her lap and on her shoulder, and she opens her eyes to her boys. Sora blinks up at her, those bright blue eyes she first loved, as a child, and Riku whispers in her ear “Happy New Year, Kairi,” soft and low.
“Is it?” She asks, voice thick.
“Just about,” Sora chirps, and moves to sit on her other side.
They sit just like that as the year dies, and the new one is born in the two kisses pressed to her mouth.
