She was sitting on the curb, her fingers twisted together. Her hangnails were all chewed, and her foot jittered anxiously, making her cheap silver anklet jiggle and dance. There were dark circles under her eyes and coffee stains on her t-shirt.
She’d been waiting for a storm. Any one should do. That’s what the shadows said.
Concrete chips were digging into her butt, and a bead of sweat was trickling down her back, unreachable, and annoying. She was in the way; people were cursing at her as they passed. It was okay – she cursed back, muttering nasty words so fast they became one long, irritated obscenity.
But then there was the sound of a far-off thunderclap and Ralene’s sped-up words snapped off. It was coming soon.
Her nailbeds were turning white and the other foot had started manically tapping the asphalt when the dark clouds started to appear. She was chewing her lip as rain dripped down, teasingly slow, fat drops of water bursting all over the sidewalk and turning it dark.
She wanted to shriek. She couldn’t wait anymore. It was coming!
The winds started gusting so fast and the howl was incredible, loud and menacing and dangerous. Like her. Like she would be. That’s what the shadows swore.
Lightening flashed bright and Ralene, with her spazzy darting eyes, finally saw the door. It was black and scary and it was swallowing the slowpoke jerks whole.
It was going to eat her heart and steal her soul. But it would free her from limits and laws and time...and she would never have to wait again. For the first time ever, she couldn’t run fast enough.
