Title: You're Never Too Old (For Your Mom to Call In)
Word Count: 552
(anything else): Post KH-2
Riku had that look about him. The look that a man had when he’d had his heart stolen right from his chest by a Soldier heartless. Blank stare, dark bags, parted lips. The slow kind of dizzy shuffle that made you unsure whether he was going to fall over forwards or backwards.
Kairi and Sora sat side-by-side on stools, their arms folded on the kitchen island. Sora chewed his strawberry jam toast slowly. Kairi blew on her freshly blue painted nails. Their eyes followed Riku in his slow journey across the kitchen.
Riku stopped in front of the espresso machine. He reached, inch-by-inch, for a white mug sitting in the dish strainer, then shoved it underneath the espresso spout. He pressed the button that would give him a double shot. He drank the double shot down like a bride-to-be at a bar, even though it was scorching hot. He did not even flinch at the damage to his throat. He merely blinked thoughtfully, then put the mug back underneath the espresso spout and pressed his beloved button again.
Sora finally swallowed his jam and his toast. “What time do you think he got in last night?” he asked Kairi casually, since getting a response from Riku at this time of the day was essentially impossible.
“Well, I went to bed around three, and he still hadn’t come home, so...” Kairi turned her hand this way and that, examining the colour. “My guess would be four.”
“It was Friday night,” Sora mused, pushing his empty plate away from him.
“And now it’s Saturday morning,” she said. “At the Surf Shop. On the boardwalk. In July.”
Sora smiled. “Friendly cashier by day, brooding bartender by night. All while enduring tourists and drunk minors on three hours of sleep and four shots of espresso.”
“Laugh it up,” Riku said finally, exhaustedly slurred, as he sat down on the stool beside Kairi and poured himself a bowl of corn flakes. “I’ll remember that the next time I’m buying you dinner for the ninth time.”
Sora reached for the portable phone and dialled a number quickly.
His face was completely straight, which of course made Riku suspicious. Riku straightened, his eyes narrowing. “Who—”
“Yes, helllooooooo?” Sora said in a high-pitched voice that made Kairi wince and cover her ears. “Thiiiiiiiis is Riiiiku’s mother calling. Heeeee will not be in for his shift today. He is veeeery ill. Good day!”
Riku’s jaw dropped open furiously. But he was too tired to do much more than blink multiple times. “Sora! Goddamnit, I need the money!”
“That really didn’t sound anything like Riku’s mother,” Kairi said casually. “Or like any woman.”
Riku was reaching tiredly to grab the phone from Sora, his fingers opening and closing fruitlessly in the air. “Give. It. To. Me.”
“No,” Sora said, holding it up in the air. “What’s done is done. I’ll lend you the fifty bucks you would have made. But you’re coming to the beach with us.”
Riku gave up, dropping his head into his arms. “Ugh,” he retorted.
Kairi reached to take the phone from Sora’s hand. Her face, too, was straight, as she dialled another number.
“Who are you calling?” Sora asked.
“The bar,” she said. “Pretending to be Riku’s father.”
Riku slept the whole day at the beach.
