Challenge: [236] Memento
Title: Scraps of Home
Word Count: 310
Spoilers: None.
Characters: Traverse Town crew
Aerith had a flower tucked in her hair on the day they escaped their home. She hadn't known it was there. She thinks, maybe, the smiling gladiator boy had sneaked it into her braid when she wasn't looking. It's faded now, pressed between sheets of paper, but she remembers it was a bright yellow, and she thinks, perhaps, it smelled sweet.
Yuffie wishes she had a photograph, but the best she has is her old schoolbook, which had been forgotten at the bottom of the backpack she grabbed when she had to run. It has notes from class, more notes from her friends, doodles scribbled in the corners. She has half a mind to keep up with her studies, finish her assignments, make Mr. Angeal proud. She never does, though. Some of the pages are blurred, particularly the sections on history, but she can almost make out the letters. She spends half an hour squinting at a heading until she's pretty sure it reads "Radish Gerbil," and then gives up.
Cid isn't sentimental. The miniature rocket is just a model for the gummiship he plans to build.
Leon didn't take anything when he left his home. He was too busy fighting, too busy to grab some material thing. It would slow him down, and if he allowed himself to slow, then he wouldn't deserve it anyway. He left something, though. He left it safely tucked away where nobody could harm it, and he made sure what he left was important, so he'd have no choice but to return for it someday. Leon misses it, but he knows that one day when his home is saved, when he's repaired it so nobody could tell it was ever broken, he'll be able to take back his name and be Squall again.
