[250]: Aerith and Yuffie
Jan. 6th, 2011 02:42 amTitle: Corolla, Calyx
Challenge: [250] Sugar and Spice
Characters: Aerith, Yuffie
Rating: G
Word Count: 306
Notes: The title is just some botany-nerd flower anatomy, that's all. Takes place in Radiant Garden, sometime post-KH1. Also, this fandom needs more girl-girl friendship, yes? (Doesn't every fandom?)
I love all the girl-centric entries this challenge has spawned! ♥
A bright morning, sunny and warm. Aerith hums a song from her childhood, a melody whose words are long forgotten, as she walks home from the florist. Her arms are full of flowers, and she wears earth-stained overalls.
"Hey, need any help?" Yuffie asks, noticing the difficulty that Aerith has trying to balance containers of flowers and gardening equipment. Yuffie doesn't wait for a reply before taking one of the cartons.
"Thanks, Yuffie," Aerith says simply, and they walk in companionable silence before reaching the house that they and the others stay in.
The sun burns the backs of their necks as they stand in the garden, floral scents stirring on the breeze.
"Why dontcha teach me a little bit about this?" Yuffie asks, surveying the brightly-colored flowers with curiosity.
"You never showed any interest in gardening before," Aerith asks, but she smiles, and appears quite pleased with herself. "I have an extra pair of gloves here, somewhere."
The two women kneel side-by-side in the dirt, Aerith pointing out the different types of flowers and showing her younger friend how to plant them. They're so different, and yet they have always found ways to connect with each other. When this world died, so many years ago, they were drawn to each other, two girls bound to Leon in different ways. And yet over time, their bond with each other grew even stronger. Aerith was the kind, patient older sister that Yuffie never had, and Aerith enjoyed her role.
"It's funny, that we've all stayed together like this," Yuffie says suddenly. "We've rebuilt and everything, but we're all still friends."
Aerith smudges a speck of dirt across Yuffie's nose, and the girls collapse into laughter. When the Heartless destroyed their world, they'd managed to find something precious in the wreckage. And they would both protect it, in all the little ways that mattered.
