Challenge: [256] Science-Fiction
Characters: Riku, Sora, Kairi, River, Simon, Mal
Word Count: 600
Notes: KH/Firefly crossover, knowledge of FireflyVerse is reccomended. I took the prompt kind of literally. I'm sorry that this thing is kind of an incoherent mess towards the end--it didn't want to be cut down. I've also never written the FF gang before. Consider this a snippet of a larger, postKH2 piece.
Every time Riku thought they’d come across the strangest world yet, he was proved wrong by his arrival on the one afterwards. This one wasn’t particularly strange at first glance—they’d kept their appearances, and the other inhabitants were human. But once said inhabitants opened their mouths—or you figured out it exactly where you were—things started to get a little odd.
On the other hand, he was learning to swear in Chinese, and that was, admittedly, pretty cool.
“…and now the gorram Reavers ain’t the only things we’re dealin’ with,” Captain Reynolds was saying to his crew, plus two, as Riku came back from exploring the ship, where he’d been looking for a keyhole. He leaned next to Sora and Kairi, against the control panels, and hoped he wasn’t bumping anything particularly important. Reynolds paid him no mind and continued his orders. “And if the Alliance starts siding with these damn Brainless we’ll likely be seein’ more trouble in this ‘verse than they already give us.”
“Heartless,” Sora interjected, as all turned to him. “They’re called Heartless.”
“I don’t give a damn what they are,” Reynolds replied. “I just want them out of my gorram sky. You said greed, and lust, and a manner of bad human things attracts them, right?”
Sora nodded.
Reynolds turned to his crew again. “Better keep Jayne locked up pretty well then.”
The man named Jayne began to protest as Captain Reynolds turned away from the bridge. Riku turned to Sora and Kairi, who merely shrugged; Reynolds hadn’t officially introduced them to his crew. It was obvious that he didn’t take kindly to strangers, and that as soon as he dropped them off on the next rock, as he said, he didn’t want to see them around his boat again. Riku wasn’t particularly happy to be there either, but there was a reason that they’d been dropped at this point in this complex world, though an exploration of the ship hadn’t provided any clues.
“I couldn’t find the Keyhole,” he told his companions, who were far better at interacting with people, and had been left to tell their story while he searched. “But there were places I couldn’t get to.”
“You’re looking for the place where the Darkness flows in,” someone said from behind him, and Riku turned to find a small, matter-of-fact, teenage girl. “You’re the ones who will lock the door.”
Before he could reply, one of them men grabbed the girl’s arm. “Don’t bother them, River.”
“She wasn’t bothering us,” Kairi replied honestly. She leaned in closer to the girl. “River? Do you know where we can find the lock?”
“No. But I know where you can find the key.” Suddenly, she drew very close to Kairi, and put an ear over her heart. She was pulled back very suddenly, by the man who’d berated her in the first place, as he apologized again. Behind them, the rest of the crew sniggered.
“I’m sorry. River is very…unused to meeting new people.”
Riku was beginning to wonder if this was really a spaceship, or just a nuthouse, when River broke free of the man’s grip and stood in front of him. She had to crane her neck, and it made her look very tiny. “You remind me of the Captain. He seems like he’s made of Darkness too, but when you look close enough, you see that it’s Light.”
“Can you show us the Keyhole, River?” he asked, slowly.
She broke into a manic grin. “You promise to lock the Darkness away and keep them safe?"
“I promise.”
She led him to the engine room.

Date: 2011-03-24 04:58 pm (UTC)You did it so much better though ♥
So, I hope you were serious about this being a snippet of a larger piece? Because I would love to read it!

Date: 2011-03-24 05:41 pm (UTC)At any rate, I'm glad that you liked it! I didn't think that it was anything special, so it's very refreshing to know that someone else did.

Date: 2011-03-25 02:09 am (UTC)Though if you do more with this, I'd love to see a real look at how the KH trio interacts with the rest of the crew. Mal and (oddly) River are relatively relatable from their perspective. But what happens when they find out what Inara does for a living? What does Sora's face look like when Jayne says "Let's go be bad guys"? Of course, you can't explore nine characters each interacting with three characters in only 600 words...
