Title: Roll of the Dice
Word Count: 621
Spoilers: Surprisingly, none.
Notes: In which I fall out of practice at writing drabble length yet again, and Terra almost breaks the fourth wall. Sort of inspired by something that happened to me, except I was playing as Ven. I just thought it would be more amusing with Terra, since he spends most of his time being so serious, so he's more fun to tease.
Terra remembered hearing somewhere that if you blew on a die before rolling it, it would bring good luck. He'd tried it a few times with Aqua and Ven, when they played board games together, but it never seemed to work for him.
Well, it couldn't hurt. Then again... he didn't see how things could get worse. He breathed over the dice, shut his eyes, and threw them. Then slowly opened his eyes again.
"...Three...?" He stared in dismay. "But I just sacrificed my last magic card..." Staring across the meadow, he demanded, "Look, can I re-roll or something? I'm just having a streak of bad luck."
"That is not how the game works, my boy," chided Merlin's disembodied voice. "You must learn to accept whatever fortune deals you."
He sighed heavily. "Okay, okay... fine." Three steps forward brought him onto one of Tigger's panels. A few of the golden coins stuffed in his pocket vanished, and Tigger bounced excitedly on his tail. "Hoo-ray!"
"Merlin, this is not fair!" Terra yelled towards the sky. "How is this supposed to awaken my innermost abilities?" When no answer came, he added, "The dice were all sticky!"
"Hazards of the course, my dear boy," Merlin replied cryptically. "Patience is the key to awakening those abilities."
"But they were all sticky! That bear... thing... is covering everything with honey!" He jabbed his finger at Pooh, who was sitting on one of Terra's panels, contentedly eating out of a jar of honey-- or "hunny," whatever-- with his paws. Whatever it was, it had spilled on several panels of the game board, the dice, his shoes, and part of his hakama. Someone would pay the damn cleaning bill for this.
"Can't you enjoy a pleasant day in the countryside? My goodness, most people would welcome such a break from their hectic life."
"This is not a break," Terra grumbled. Playing a game to awaken his innate abilities was something he could deal with. Playing a game with ridiculous, unnecessary, and obscure rules-- fine, he could deal with that too. What he hadn't expected was the bear... thing. And the tiger thing. And the damn honey. And the bear thing had just bought another one of his panels, he realized, as a sudden deposit of coins appeared in his pocket.
"That had my most valuable card on it!" Terra shouted across the playing board to the oblivious Pooh. Clenching his hands into fists, he felt darkness surging through his blood, and pushed it down, breathing heavily. Not here. This was not a good place for darkness.
"My turn!" Tigger grabbed the two dice and threw them, landing... an eleven. There is no way this game is not rigged, Terra thought, watching the bouncing tiger landing on yet another one of his panels. And buying it.
This was too much.
"I'm quitting!" he shouted, kicking over an empty jar of "hunny," which stuck to his foot. And felt a sharp pain in his hand-- one of the bees buzzing around the spilled liquid had just stung him.
"Guh... you..." He summoned his Keyblade into his hand, not caring any more that it was trailing dark flames, and swung it at nothing in particular. "I hate this game!"
--And hit the floor in Merlin's house with a heavy thump, as the book forcibly spit him out. He sat up, cringing and rubbing his back.
"That was most unsportsmanlike conduct, my boy," Merlin said archly, waving his finger.
"That game is unsportsmanlike," Terra groused. The wizard sighed and shut the book.
"If you ever want to reconsider--"
"I think," Terra said, "that I don't like playing by rules." And staggered to his feet, heading off in search of a good cleaner's.
