Challenge: [260] Music
Title: Nobody's Song

Notes: It's an odd take on the prompt I'm aware, but the general idea has been haunting me for a while, so I let Saix muse.

 

The whirr of frisbees in my ears, the curling snicker of your laugh, the way your grin almost sang, that everlasting phrase you tried to sear into everyone’s brain.  That was all the music I ever knew.  All the music I ever needed right up until that day.  The day everything we knew melted away like your ice cream did when you got too distracted talking about the stars and goats to remember to eat it in time.  The day our childhood shriveled up just like the raisins you used to flick at me because you hated how creepy raisins always looked. The day we lost ourselves.

 

That day.

 

Yet somehow you still managed to make music, even trapped in these gray walls.  Your laugh was drier and your grin twisted a bit more, but the melody was there.  “Got it memorized” still throbbed in my ears and I clung to the sound even though I had walled up and iced over so you wouldn’t realize how desperately I still needed your song.  How desperately I still listened for that laugh, those words, watched for the maddening smirk that SANG.  The notes no longer belonged to me, but I listened all the same because if I forgot hard enough, I could almost go back.

 

Back to us.

 

Your chair sits across from me now.  Wiped clean.  Empty.  Like the echo of your laugh.  The shattered twist of your smile.  Like the remnants of your song. The white blurs together and suddenly you're there.  One flash of that grin.  One burst of color.  One last note roaring in my ears.

 

And then it's quiet.
