Challenge [269]: Roles Reversed
Jul. 30th, 2011 12:23 amChallenge: 269 - Roles Reversed
Title: Loneliness
Word Count: 577
Notes: I actually really love this prompt. Everyone's probably out of character, but I had fun. Hey, so, I was unlucky enough to have not been able to access LJ for three days or so, randomly enough. It was down... Anyway, I totally didn't think I was going to do this prompt, but it turns out I have ideas. These AU prompts are going to kill me, because I'm going to want to continue every single one of them. Hope you enjoy.
When the Door opened, the three of them felt like they had no choice but to go. In the calm eye of the storm, their little island had a heaviness settled over it that none of them could sense.
In the paopu grove, the darkness seethed and circled and twisted wildly, calling, come, children, come see the world of worlds and it was the most beautiful song they’d ever heard.
One step forward and Kairi was standing in the midst of it, a look of awe filling her face. She twirled around and danced until it looked painful. With a grin on her face, she pirouetted to face her boys and held out her hand.
“Come on,” she said, “this is what we were waiting for, isn’t it?”
Sora’s head is filled with secret promises and uncomfortable situations where the light of his life asked him to forget about the ground beneath his feet. He steps forward and takes her hand.
he hasn’t learned enough wisdom yet
---
Riku’s world falls apart. He thought he wasn’t afraid of anything. He changes his mind when he sees what’s going on with Kairi and Sora, who he thought were so untouchable.
Stepping away from the light has changed them; darkness twisting them just so, a little tiny bit closer to what its own nature is.
Kairi and Sora, still so innocent and steeped in the light, and now, a tiny sliver of shadow lurking behind the surface. They look at him expectantly, like, what are you waiting for? They know he’s the most eager to leave, but now his left foot starts sliding backwards.
Sora looks confused and completely at a loss, but despite the sad twist to her lips, there’s something eager about Kairi.
she finally has the one she wants all to herself
---
Riku sits alone, holding the Keyblade at eye level. He’s examining it but also staring into nothing. Donald and Goofy have learned not to try too hard to cheer him up when he’s like this because the melancholy is contagious.
“Should the Keyblade wielder always be happy?” Riku wonders aloud, but no one answers. (They’ve wised up and have learned that responding to him in this state just enables his angst.)
The worst part of it all was the sinking realization afterwards. He’d been so pumped to fly. After he profusely thanked Peter and Tinkerbell, he started thinking of how he was going to tell the story to Sora and Kairi but then - that same sick feeling of grief squeezed his stomach until he couldn’t breathe.
They looked so content together. So complete. When he rejected their extended hands for the third time, they didn’t look sad anymore, and Riku never felt more superfluous. Like the third wheel. The understudy who thought he was on that night only to find that the lead actor had gotten him fired.
So when Kairi pulls the Keyblade away from him, Riku isn’t as utterly crushed as he ought to be. They are destroying him everyday. Sora doesn’t meet his eyes. Kairi doesn’t even pretend to be sorry.
When they leave, Goofy and Donald in tow, Riku stands there for an hour and tries to think about nothing. When Beast comes along and gives him a verbal kick in the pants, it sparks something in Riku he didn’t know was missing.
he finally realizes that he’s going to fight for them like he should’ve since day one

Also... Does the winner post the new challenge? Is that the way it works?

Date: 2011-08-02 04:34 pm (UTC)Actually, I'm quite surprised at how many people love the version of Kairi, whereas I'm totally fascinated by this different Riku. Now I'm starting to kinda wonder, like, "oh, yeah, evil!Kairi, I wonder what everyone thinks that she's thinking..."

Date: 2011-08-03 02:19 am (UTC)For me, it's just so different from her general fandom portrayals, and she IS one of my favourite characters.. I've seen a bit more of your version of Riku, but hardly ever an evil but not bitchy Kairi. Not that Sora and Riku aren't awesome or anything- I love how you wrote them, too. Just... Wow, /Kairi/.
SUPER LONG RESPONSE
Date: 2011-08-03 03:11 am (UTC)I am actually in the process of putting all my writing on my actual LJ, so you can check my main journal page. I have some stuff on FF.net, under the penname Apakoha. Not the proudest of everything, but I figure there are worse things that letting people see some of my ideas.
Oh, jeez, I dunno. Like, considering how many times Riku and Sora ran into each other in canon, I may want to retcon this part of the fic into like, the sixth time Riku rejects their invitation. Ugh, no, I wouldn't do that. But yeah, definitely so curious. It's on my list. Right now I'm playing around with my last drabble, the one where Kairi doesn't exist? And then straight onto this one, I guess. I was imagining close to the end of the game, around Monstro/Neverland. That part of the story always cut me deep. "I thought you liked games... Or are you too cool to play them now that you have the Keyblade?" SO MUCH SUBTEXT
If you go onto my journal and end up clicking around, you may see some of my opinions of Kairi. I feel she's so wasted in KH!canon. There are so many ways I could play around with her characterization. And this one is pretty darn fun. I hate the way the fandom treats her. If whiny teeny bopper girls actually saw her as a person, this drabble would just be a rehash of an old idea. Y'know?
Re: SUPER LONG RESPONSE
Date: 2011-08-04 10:03 pm (UTC)I'm in the process of reading it all, though LJ is against me commenting there. So far the one word I use to describe everything is beautiful- need new adjectives, wot? I especially like the latest post. Tis epic. Wait, you're Apakoha?? I've read some of your stuff already then! Woot! I'm MyrrhDarkwing over there. Most of my stuff's from here, though.
That drabble is also made of win! Messing with it=upgraded awesomeness, ja? You liked the games line too?! That bit would be a very good rejection point, yeeees, because there is already so much emotion (and yes, SUBTEXT!).
Considering her only action bit is near the end of the second game? Have to agree there. She's a great character, and is the basis for A LOT of plot... But you almost never see her! Grah! Toying with her characterisation is quite fun, though, and you do it magnificently. Evil!Kairi FTW! Haven't you heard, though? She gets in the way of all the hot yaoi buttsex! It could be a ridiculously cute OT3 (OT8?), but noooo... Believe me, I'm a sporker, I know (and RAEG). Poor Kairi.
Re: SUPER LONG RESPONSE
Date: 2011-08-05 01:34 am (UTC)Heartless Fic is so awesome! And it links me to even more people in the fandom - there was this Twilight Town spork I LOVED because it was basically a fic in and of itself. I don't know that I myself will spork but I am tempted to try my hand at it. I find that badfic really drags me down, haha. Like, emotionally, I can feel it affecting who the characters are in my head. And it hurts. =( I live almost entirely in the realm of goodfic. But like I said, I think I'd to try my hand sometime. (Also, I will go check out kh-request.)
LJ doesn't want you to post on my journal?! Awful. It is the site being dumb, though? But whoa, wait, what have you read under Apakoha? I had no idea random people here know some of my stuff already. Wow.
Messing with it = adding more and more so it's more of a fic than a drabble. It'll go onto my journal, and I would say something in the entry so you know what it's extrapolated from.
Flip, when I think of KH1, that part of the game is what pops in my head and it's all centred around that line. Love it to bits. (Go David Gallagher - whenever I'm just saying it to myself for the emotional resonance flip I'm so weird, that one slightest hesitation right as he's saying Keyblade, wowwwwwwww.) See, wow is my word I say all the time. Instead of explaining what's so great about that line, I would rather write fic. Or an essay. So be on the lookout? Lol. Best line in the game, imo.
Ah, yes, Kairi. Even in the land of goodfic (which I think you ought to explore a little more, it's good for you!), where fanficcers actually give her the time of day, I still find her characterization lacking substance. Some of it's great, for sure, but when I try and think of who Kairi is as a person, I come up blank. I've had to fill in so many spots by myself. All this partially feeds into my love of Aqua, if you've had the chance to play BBS. 'Cause Aqua is actually a fully realized character, and she's definitely not anything like Kairi, but she is easily the best female character Kingdom Hearts has to offer. Hands down.
