Challenge: [272] Metamorphosis
Title: Subtle Changes
Word Count: 593
Notes: Because in my eyes, this prompt fits him more than anything
Once upon a radiant time, there was this calm and collected boy, named Riku. He had long, silver hair and deep aquamarine eyes that were full of hopes and dreams and wishes. He had a pretty comfortable life with two best friends and a mom and dad who both loved him dearly (and he wasn't even talking about all the people that admired him for being almost flawless). And yet, he found that he wasn't completely satisfied with his simple and happy life. He wanted to make more of it. He longed to get a good taste of adventure, a bite of something completely different and new and a sip of magical mysteries while he was at it.
These were the things that he thought would make his life complete. Things that he could not get if he stayed in Destiny Islands. That was when he decided to make a raft for him and his two best friends out of the strongest wood that the silver-haired boy could find. The three of them would sail over the ocean and discover all the other worlds that lay beyond this horizon. Riku was sure that they would finally see other things than sand, palm trees and water as far as the eye could see (he was really starting to get sick of it).
However, destiny seemed to have other plans with him, for the raft was destroyed in a storm. In that same night, he lost track of his two best friends and woke up, surrounded by thick darkness. A wicked witch showed him the way. He realized far too late that it was not the right path that he had chosen in his despair, for everything was getting darker and darker, even with the light that some hearts provided him.
In the mean time, the hag had filled his heart and his mind with pure darkness and sinister thoughts, which made him turn into a cold-hearted bastard, thinking that Sora, his best friend was replacing him with a short tempered duck and a talking dog that could walk on its hinds. (Of course, Sora had always been the type to make friends with weirdos, that much he knew, but this had still come as a great shock to him.) It was this jealousy that consumed him…
It would take Riku a full year to realize how wrong he had been about Sora… how wrong he had been about everything else, too…
He was glad that he found the right road, the road to dawn, just in time. He had more than gladly started walking down that road. However, as ashamed as he was, he had to admit that there was a blank spot of probably one year in his memories. An empty space and he didn't even know how or why he had amnesia… Who knew how many people he had hurt and killed during that year.
It would take another year for him to realize that he had changed. He never became that same male teen who couldn't wait to go on an adventure. It was too late for that, anyway. No, the new Riku knew what it meant to be away from home for so long. He had been through a lot, but that had made him see that he didn't need the darkness to achieve his goals and become a strong person to protect those things that mattered.
This transformation had been just what he had needed all these years and in the end, he was more than thankful for it.
