Challenge: 273 - Road to Damascus
Title: World of Grey
Word Count: 504
Notes: Uh, yeah, this prompt did not go where I expected, or quite where I wanted to end up, but hey, whatever, this happened.
---
Ventus squinted at the clothes the people in the castle brought for him. Black, white, black, white, black, white. He dressed slowly, picking at the seams of his shirt, and running his hands down the material of his pants. The checkered wristband seemed to be an afterthought. After a minute of study, he decided that black and white didn’t quite fit, but it was okay. He slid it on his wrist.
The two teenagers came and introduced themselves as Terra and Aqua. Hello, goodbye. They left after a minute, leaving him to ‘get situated’. He watched them practice in the courtyard - he had a window in his room. He heard their distant laughter, saw their pretend fighting, wondered at their easy grace. Black and white.
A knock at his door startled Ventus out of his thinking. Master Eraqus quietly asked him if he’d like dinner. Ventus nodded after a moment’s thought. Yes, he’d like that.
o
He was soon talking. Chattering, even. He loved to talk, especially with Terra and Aqua. One of his favourite memories was when the two of them dragged Ventus out of bed and took him to look at the stars. All of them talked a lot that night. Terra explained where he wanted to travel and all the sights he wanted to see. Aqua was different, talking about love, and justice, and fixing everything wrong in the universe.
“What about you, Ven?” she asked. “What are you thinking about right now?”
Right then, he was thinking that he wanted everyone to call him Ven for the rest of his life. So he told them that, and then that he wished he could be around Terra and Aqua forever. They smiled, and told him that was called ‘friendship’. They were friends.
He was so happy. Black and white, white, white.
o
Terra will be different, the boy in black said. Terra won’t be your friend anymore.
Ven thought he’d rather die than let that happen. So he chased Terra, and Aqua chased him. They adventured through the stars, not together, but they also weren’t alone. Ven felt like a star sometimes. Just a speck of white in an impossibly huge world of black.
Xehanort lived in the world of black. Vanitas lived there. Terra was living on the line and seeing how close he was made Ven’s heart squeeze. Eraqus, who lived in white, tried to kill him and Ven thought since his master was so good, it must be okay. Then Terra stopped it and life happened almost too fast. They all fought. Xehanort and Terra, Vanitas and Aqua. Everything is grey.
o
He is sleeping. He’s slept for so long, and he knows it will be a long time still. Around him, Sora’s young heart holds him and shields him, pulls on Ven’s mix of black and white. He’s so strong, and Ven hopes that one day they will be friends.
So he waits. He closes his eyes and waits until the world isn’t bleached so white. He misses colour.
