^^o Here's my drabble entry! I'm sorry it seems a bit long, but I couldn't cut it anywhere and have it still be decent.

*----*----*

The ball had bounced and then rolled down the corridor, disappearing into the thick, eerie shadows towards the end where the light of the windows did not reach. There was a stunned silence, the shifting of two children’s bodies as they exchanged hesitant glances.

“Well, go get it, Squall!” A mocking sneer. “You dropped it!”

“What?! No, I didn’t! You did—” Squall was cut off abruptly as he was shoved towards the direction the ball had vanished in. Casting a furious blue glare over his shoulder at the older boy, the eleven-year-old started down the corridor.

It was creepy, especially with the knowledge of all the rumors drifting about the kingdom. Mothers told their children not to go too far into the bastion or they’d get eaten by the monsters that lurked there. But Squall didn’t have a mother—she had died giving birth to him—and he didn’t even know if he had a father. And so, having grown up in the bastion, he knew there weren’t any monsters about. Sometimes, however, when the wind moaned through the corridors and shadows shifted along the old, stone walls, the bastion seemed almost haunted.

But Squall didn’t believe in ghosts.

Squall finally spotted the ball at the end of the corridor, and he reached down to grab it with a small, relieved look, but then he realized that it wasn’t budging. Blinking to allow his eyes to further adjust to the shadows, Squall glanced up.

And froze when he saw a pair of dark azure eyes gazing into his own curiously.

Letting the ball go with a soft gasp, Squall straightened and staggered back a step, staring at the long white hair, bronze skin, and thin, wire-rimmed spectacles. Tall and almost foreboding, the man with the amused smile on his full lips caused Squall’s heart to give a quiver in fear.

Were there such things as ghosts, after all?!

“Hello.” The ghost knelt, long, slender fingers wrapping around the ball and holding it out to Squall easily. He remained in a kneel, a kind smile replacing the amused one, and the blue eyes twinkled.

Squall swallowed against his dry throat, little heart pounding against his ribcage. Well, it couldn’t possibly be a ghost, now could it? Ghosts were insubstantial!

“…Hi…” Squall replied after a minute.

A strong, large hand rustled his chestnut brown locks, and as he stared into those warm eyes, he couldn’t find it within himself to pull away.

“What is your name, young man?”

Squall’s chest swelled a little at “young man”. He was used to being referred to as a “boy”. “Squall Leonhart, sir.”

“Squall Leonhart?” the man repeated. “…Interesting. I am known as Ansem.”

“…An…sem…?” Squall smiled a little—it felt awkward. “King Ansem?”

The amused smile was back. “Yes. Now play carefully, alright? I would hate for anything terrible to become of you. You should not drift so far away from the… light.”

Squall took the proffered ball and nodded once. “Yes, sir,” he replied obediently.

Ansem smiled again, and Squall realized that he had just made a new friend. Grinning a little, the boy thanked his elder and ran off happily with his toy. Blue eyes glittered after him the entire way.
