Sensation. This was the first thing that returned to Kairi after she had been tossed out of that non-place, away from the source of all the darkness…and all the light.
There was no sand, no beach with gentle cresting waves beneath her. She was cold and felt no wind to show for it.
Smell. Where was the salt? The familiar smell of moldering wood and musty earth? Kairi could only detect dust and metal; the smell of disuse and something like ozone.
Sound. Kairi only realized it when she noticed the absence of it; the space it left was oppressive, as though the very air could not hold the weight of a whisper. She became frightened, for this was unlike any silence she had ever known. It carried none of the gentle stillness found on a tropical night.
Sight. As Kairi opened her eyes, she found that all around her was dim and grey. She was in a musty bed, moth eaten and infested with vermin. The marbled stone around her was in no better condition.
Finally, she panicked.
Her heart quickening, Kairi rose and ran across the once luxurious room to a set of enormous, heavy drapes. She tripped over an old vase on her way, breaking the fragile thing into pieces. Her eyes continued to focus on their goal even as a stray shard caught her knee. A cruel blue light was shining through ragged tears in the heavy velvet, ripped as though by great claws.
No! She cried silently, still unable to break the horrid quiet. It isn’t! It isn’t my home, not anymore!
