Notes: This is the association that happens in my head from "Kingdom Hearts" and "cliche." Sorry.

“Awwwwww!”

Sora and Riku looked at each other, and then back to Selphie. “So, um.” Sora rubbed his neck. “You’re not freaked out, then?”

“Of course not! This is perfect!” Selphie was so excited she actually waved her arms over her head. Riku raised his eyebrow. Sora, who had about a dozen other friends now who acted like that, didn’t notice. “Sora’s the short energetic devoted one, and Riku’s the tall quiet moody one.”

“Uh,” Riku said, not entirely okay with that description.

“Yeaaaaah,” Sora said, as though Selphie had pointed out something totally obvious. “So?”

“No, I mean, it’s just like in the cartoons!” Selphie gushed. “Riku’s gonna be all cool and distant and grumpy…”

“What.”

“And Sora will chase after you and do all this really cute over-the-top stuff to prove that you should be together…”

“Do I have to?” Sora asked. Riku gave him a look. “Nono, that’s not what I meant! I mean… can’t we just do normal stuff? And, y’know, be happy?” He grabbed Riku’s hand, to demonstrate what “happy” might look like.

Riku didn’t look happy, exactly, more like awkward or embarrassed. But he did say, “I think those cartoons are a little unrealistic.”

“Well, yeah,” Selphie said, “I know not everybody’s exactly like that. But you guys actually are! I mean, I bet Sora was the one who confessed, right?”

“Nope,” Sora said. “He asked me out. I… actually kinda maybe took a little too long to realize what was going on.”

Selphie’s eyes went wide. “You were shy? Sora, that’s so cute!”

“You do know Sora, right?” Riku asked. “You’re sure you got all those memories back? When has he ever been shy?”

“…” Selphie said. “Do I have this backwards? Which one of you is the one who looks up to the other one and wishes they could be that cool and badass and melts into a puddle of romantic goo whenever the other one does something nice?”

“Me,” both boys said at the same time. Riku added, “But I do not melt into goo.”

“You sorta do,” Sora said. “Like the time in the rowboat when…” Riku stepped on his foot. “Ow! What was that for? I was just saying that when – ow!” He finally made eye contact with Riku and realized he was supposed to shut up.

Riku cleared his throat. “What were you saying, Selphie?”

“Okay, how about this. Which one of you is protective and bossy and likes getting a reaction out of the other one?”

“I’m not bossy,” Sora said.

Riku smirked. “Rowboat?”

“That wasn’t bossy, that was… well… okay, I guess maybe. But what about that time you made me – ow! Stop that!”

“Ahem. Yeah, that was both of us again, Selphie.”

She frowned. “I’m not sure how else I can ask this. Um, okay, this is going to sound horrible and I know this isn’t really how it works, but hypothetically, if one of you was a girl, which one would it be?”

Sora and Riku said in unison, “Him.” They looked at each other, but instead of arguing again they both laughed.

“Augh! You two can’t do anything right.” Selphie thought of something. “Wait, have you told Kairi?”

“She knows, yeah,” Riku said.

“What did she say?”

“Um.” Sora blushed a little. “I think it was ‘Sora, you dope, that was a date.’” Selphie facepalmed. “We did stuff together all the time! How was I supposed to know it was different?”

“You’re such boys,” Selphie said.

“Well, yeah,” Riku said. “That’s the whole point.” And of course they were still holding hands.

Sometimes I wonder... in an alternate universe where Sora was taller than Riku, what would you see on ff.net? Sora's more confident, more emotionally stable, more protective, and more of a leader. I have moments where I don't know where the case for seme!Riku is even coming from.

When you put it that way, I do believe a lot of people put Riku in that position due to height. But blah people. I love the two of them being equal and I love how you portrayed it. :)

This is adorable! I just kind of want to pat Selphie on the head, because who says there has to be 'a girl' anyway?

She means an uke, of course, and she knows that's not actually the same as a girl. But when you actually say "seme and uke" or "top and bottom" or "dominant and submissive" you get a lot of stereotypes popping up automatically in people's minds. (Including mine - I had to remind myself that I really wasn't making Sora an uke by writing him as somewhat oblivious.) Part of what I wanted to do was poke at those stereotypes, so I consciously avoided those words even though Selphie (and maybe Riku) ought to have known them.

I actually had a friend do the "you idiot, that was a date" thing to me. I'm a wee bit oblivious to things like that. This is super lovely though and you kept how they are and tweaked the fandom a bit on how they're perceived to be. :)

I don't actually mind reading Riku/Sora, (as opposed to Sora/Riku) even though that's not my reading of canon for anything set after KH1. What really gets me is importing seme or uke stereotypes onto them, like Shy!Sora. I mean, what?

I didn't actually read the title til you pointed it out! But then I did and I was reading your comment while in the car with my mom and started laughing and had to try to explain it!
