Challenge [288]: Sora
Title: frame the halves and call them brothers
Word Count: 598
Notes: What happens if Sora doesn't wake up? Title from this, which is the most Sora & Roxas song ever.

"I don't want to go," Roxas says. It echoes through him like the rattling of bones. "I don't."

Riku lays a heavy hand on his shoulder. "I know," he says. "You've got to."

"Don't have to do anything," Roxas snarls, and shrugs away from the guilt that presses down on him. It's not his own, he doesn't want it. His eyes stay firmly on his shoes, on the window, on the fine layer of dust that covers everything in the mansion. He keeps his gaze pointedly away from Riku's face; it is a cruel face, and the blatant misery, the hope there unsettles him, like locking eyes with an open wound.

"I am sorry," says Riku and it rumbles false and deep. Roxas knows Riku now: he knows, inexplicably, the quickening in his chest when he hears Sora's name, the way he looked, once, a lifetime ago, bathed in sunshine and silhouetted by an anonymous sea. He knows why Riku flinches from him, however well he hides it, somehow afraid that Roxas's existence will cheapen Sora, his Sora. He knows Riku's true face and his real words and because of this he knows that he's not sorry, not even a little. He might be sorry for that, though; necessity and regret are things that Riku knows, if the only things. Roxas sighs and slumps against the wall.

"Why did you let me remember?" he mumbles, because that's two lives Riku wants him to give up. Hayner, Pence, Olette, and. Axel. He might've done the smart thing, and gone with him in another life (in the next life). "Why do want him back so badly?"

Riku's mouth falls open; he recovers, but it happened. "It's not me, it's everyone. Sora is important. He's the only one who can fix everything." He slides down the wall next to Roxas. "Yes," he says quietly, finally, "I want him back that badly."

-

"Oh," says Naminé. Her tone makes the bottom fall out of Riku's stomach.

"What's happening? What's wrong?" He rushes to her, follows her open, terrified stare to Sora's pod. "Why isn't he waking up?"

"I don't. It wasn't enough," Naminé doesn't cry; she cracks, like porcelain, like glass, as she presses her fingers along the lines of Sora's face.

"We can try again, we'll start over—"

"Riku."

"He's not gone."

"They both are," Naminé whimpers, and Riku falls into her tiny, fragile arms.

-

"Alright, little witch," says Axel, "you ready to go?"

Naminé looks out in front of her, at her table spread with crayons and blank paper. She is, of course. "Our deal?"

"I'll hold up my end," Axel promises, holds up a three-fingered salute. "No more Organization, just you and me." A low moan rises from the far end of the room, muffled almost immediately by a violent thud. "And that guy, I guess."

Riku comes when he's called. "What now?" he asks flatly, hollow, and Axel grins.

"Naminé does her thing, and then," his laugh has always been manic, but now Naminé can only marvel at it. "We bring the party to them."

She can do this. She can break the ones who broke her. DiZ lies disturbingly still in the corner, masked and forgotten.

She doesn't know if they'll make things better, but at least she knows it can't get worse.

-

"Who?" Selphie asks.

"Oh, I didn't say anything," Kairi tells her.

"Well, hurry up! We'll be late." Kairi takes her hand and rises, brushes sand off her skirt. She turns her back on the sky; on the sea; on the horizon.
