Challenge: [295] Finale
Title: Letting Them Go
Word Count: 250
Warning: Spoilers for backstory in BBS.
Notes: Related to the this one I wrote for the last challenge, but you don’t really need to read that to understand this one. It may turn into a series, we’ll see. More brief notes at the end.

It was traditional that students spend a sleepless night before their Mark of Mastery Exams. She wondered ruefully how many teachers experienced the same, yet here she was. She had bequeathed to them the best of herself, and they were both Keyblade Masters in all but name.
Xehanort’s unquestionably possessed the sharper mind and the sharper blade, and he would add significantly to the Masters’ store of knowledge. He was the most brilliant student she had ever known, and his was clearly the Seeker’s path.
She would never do Xehanort the disservice of binding him to a single world, but even so, she would not lack an excellent Successor. Eraqus clearly possessed the skill, vision, determination, and spirit of self-sacrifice needed to continue her work, and his desire to teach would continue their line.
Her decisions were already made, and the Exam would merely confirm them.
Her boys had been good for each other, she thought fondly. Eraqus had instilled in Xehanort an interest in people, while Xehanort refused to allow Eraqus the comfort of philosophical complacency. Their friendship, if it could be maintained through the necessary wound of her choosing one over the other, could be a great force for balance and understanding. Perhaps they could save each other from the inevitable threats of the future, when she no longer could.
She was confident in her decision. Why, then, this unusual sleeplessness?
The hardest part of teaching was letting them go, she realized as she blew out her candle.

Author’s Note:
Once I sat down to write it, this became an experiment in “why/how the hell did Eraqus and Xehanort become Keyblade masters in the first place.” Features the same original character as the last one I wrote, because I needed to write from a perspective of someone to whom both of them were very dear. And that someone sure as hell isn’t me.

Nice.

It would have to take a special person to train both Xehanort and Eraqus. I mean, such night and day personalities would have to be difficult to deal with.

Oh, very well done! She is very believable, and I love the optimistic thoughts of the future. Too bad it didn't work out like that.
