kh_drabbleChallenge: (34) Lost and Found
Title: Transition into Darkness
Word Count: 510
Notes: Pairing-free. Should be pretty much spoiler-free as well; this is my own opinion of what I think happened as each member of the Organization was created. I've had this drabble idea lurking in my mind for quite a awhile now......
The Gunblader was powerful, but there were too many heartless. Even as he and the ninja tried their best to keep the Shadows from reaching the young man, Zexion knew it was over, knew that nothing could really prevent the arching claw that slammed through his torso and tore into his heart.
Next thing he knew, the blue-haired youth was sprawled on the floor, panting harshly and feeling as if his chest was on fire. He scrabbled at his ribs, as if wanting to pull out his heart and see if it was still there.
"Nah. You've no heart anymore, buddy." A robed, spiky redhead grinned amusedly at him from his position leaning against a nearby marble wall.
"Impossible! I'm not a heartless!"
"No, you're not. You just don't have a heart." The expositional redhead smirked. "The Shadows consumed your heart, but not your body. It's resistant somehow, like mine."
Flames screamed in his veins and burst through skin, cutting a silver tattoo across his chest. A broken heart? Zexion gave a harsh gasp as both an intense pain and an unbelievable revelation hit him--the heartless insignia. But...he was still human...
"What am I?" he stammered out.
The mysterious figure made a show of stifling a yawn. "Isn't it obvious? You're heart-less, in the literal meaning of the word. You're dead."
Dead. He stared at the leering stranger, then at his arms, his body. He looked normal, alive. Shakily he reached a hand up to his neck, placing the tip of one ice-cold finger to his jugular. No pulse. But of course. He had no heart.
"But...then...why am I here?"
"You're needed. You're not allowed to rest, not now." the irritable character arched a brow. "Anything else?"
"Yes. Who are you?"
The other's grin turned predatory. "Me? I'm Axel. I'm a part of the Organization. We want you to join us. And, yes, there're benefits," he added as an afterthought. "We can do a lot of things, with more power. We can bring you back your heart."
Zexion considered this and the emptiness in his chest. His heart had been stolen, taken forcefully and unfairly by the Shadows. Lost, gone, unreachable. Almost.
At what lengths would he go to reclaim what was his?
Finally he stood up, mildly intrigued to discover that he was dressed in a dark trenchcoat not unsimilar to Axel's own outfit. It was as if his decision was predetermined. He really wasn't very surprised--the "Organization" was skilled in lures, or so it seemed. For who of the dead wouldn't be willing to get the chance to reclaim life, reclaim their filched heart? He tentatively picked at the fabric, knowing that even if it did hide the mark that advertised him as a heartless, the transition to darkness had already begun.
He stood up, his body as frigid as a shadow's. For a moment yellow flashed in his dark eyes and Axel blinked. "I'm ready."
